JDM Brake Master Cylinder questions

Postby 5thgenbliss » Wed Jan 25, 2012 6:07 am

Gentlemen. So, I've done a few searches, and successfully confused myself a bit more. I'd like to buy a new oem BMC for my RC non ABS. This is the info I have so far:

JDM 08/1991-01/1992 ST185H-BLMQZ GT4RC
AU 08/1991-01/1992 ST185R-BLMQZQ grp-A?
part numbers:
47201-20661 non abs
47201-20720 abs

Interesting info, Europe part numbers are different:

EU 08/1991-01/1992 ST185R-BLMQZG TB4WA (think this is CS and/or A-type)
part number: 47201-20570 only one option does not say ABS or Non? Was ABS standard option in UK?

More interesting, JDM and AU BMC matching part number in EU is for:
08/1991-10/1993 ST182R-BLMVFG GTI. among other versions/years of ST182R

I tried to get a friend who was visiting Australia and Hong Kong, to come back with a BMC from a Toyota dealer, but both countries said they are discontinued.

I believe the USDM LHD part is still available though. :( unless that has changed recently too. any updates?

I haven't gotten any confirmation on JDM dealers whether the part is still available or discontinued.

Questions:

I am about to try and ask a friend who is in the UK to check for me if the BMC is still available there. This brings me to the question; Which part number should I ask/buy? The ST185R with the different part # or the ST182R with the matching JDM part #?

I also wanted to know if I have a non ABS RC, would an ABS BMC fit/work on my car still using my brake booster? Reading all the posts about bore sizes, etc etc, what I understand is ST185 ABS = ST205 ABS = 1" bore= biggest of the bunch. I don't remember reading whether the ST185 ABS BMC bolts on and works properly with the ST185 booster. Are all ST185 boosters the same? abs vs non abs? I know a ST205 BMC and booster combo is bolt on to the ST185 when you replace both units together. At this point I don't want to be replacing the booster and doing the ST205 swap. I'm just wanting to clarify whether or not ST185 ABS and non ABS BMCs can be interchangeable.

This question also arises because the UK part#s for the ST185 are different so I'm guessing it may be because ABS was standard in the UK, but i'm not sure. I also wonder why they have a different part # all together.

Are we confused yet. haha

So to summarize. Does anyone know the differences between the UK and JDM mater cylinders and why the part #s are different, and why the JDM ST185 part# is used for the UK ST182R? Does anyone know if these parts are still avail or discontinued in the UK and Japan?

My BMC is still good, but I want to have a new backup for when I eventually need to replace it.

Thoughts?

10 years later and I have the same question!
I have the CS (ABS)but cannot confirm if my BMC is the same as the standard 185 without ABS!
I have a leak! I need the part. Did anyone find one?

Don't worry, its only been 5 years

From my understanding the RC/CS has the same BMS as normal 185's, ABS and non-ABS are still different though. According to my receipts we used P/N 47201-32220 on my ABS RC, however I did an ABS delete at the same time so that may change how easily the lines match up to the ports.

Nobody in the UK has a BMC rebuild kit for an ABS Celica? That seems odd.

I'm getting more confused now :( I've been told the abs and non abs are the same and also told that the cs/rc have a larger bore!!!
I can get a exchange refurbed cylinder from TCB over here for £80 but it may be the smaller one?? and I have seen a refurb kit somewhere but my problem is I am not sure if my cs has a larger bore and I do not want to get the wrong one?? Search seems to indicate that 47201-20570 is the correct part.
I am hoping that it is the plunger/s perished causing the leak but not a pressure loss.
In the meantime I just keep topping up and dripping! bugrit. Got to love them.

Be careful if it's leaking, brake fluid eats paint which will cause rust. From my understanding the ABS brake master is larger than the non-ABS and that is the only difference, the CS/RC should not affect that. Seeing as you have ABS you want the larger one either way.
