Radiator fan

Postby Curry » Tue Jul 10, 2012 2:36 pm

I searched and found a few topics about this but nothing conclusive. Maybe someone can give me some insight.

So my main radiator fan was not working. The condenser fan is blowing non-stop as soon as ignition is on.

We figured the fan was toast so we replaced it with a slimmer fan just in case. The old fan when connected directly to the battery worked perfectly so it wasn't that.

So does that mean either a relay is bad? or the sensor under the radiator is bad?

Can I just hook up the fan to turn on with the ignition? There are a few resources out there on how to do it but what would you guys recommend? i.e. Relay type, wiring etc etc.

Anything I can do to get the condenser fan to operate normally again?

Mine just went bad and it was the relay contacts on the fuse box. I wired mine to a switch for now. Unplug the sensor at the bottom of the radiator to see if the fan kicks on or not.

Just tried that.

I disconnected the sensor. Stuck the new fan wires into the old socket and nothing. So I guess a bad relay?

My friend jumped two ports for the FAN 1 Relay in the big fuse box. When he did that It sounded like TWO relays clicking in the smaller relay box...

Going to try doing some continuity tests today to see if I can find the trouble spot. If not I may just end up wiring up one to a switch in the cabin. But I would still need to figure out how to get the ac fan to run normally...

came across this

The ac fan might be on if the connectors on your ac lines by the fire wall are making bad contact or disconnected.

No luck finding out why the fan doesn't kick on.

I wired the radiator fan to a relay which goes to a switch in the cabin. I guess this will do for now until I can figure it out.

I'm considering doing the same thing to the AC condenser fan as well but I don't know yet.

Could the water temp sender at the bottom of the rad be faulty ? The temp sender under the intercooler, sends its signals to the dash only, right ? My two cents worth. Mine is a st165.

The fan should turn on and run when that sensor is disconnected so at this point it wouldn't make a difference if it works or not.

I left it unplugged while I was testing.
