Heater intermittently working

It seems like the heater has a mind of its own. When I really really needed it to work , the vent just blows air. Then at other times I hear a like a flapper close somewhere under the dash on the right and the heater comes on. Then sometimes there is no noise and no heat.
I have not fiddled with the coolant recently and the coolant level is fine.

Any ideas ?

I hear the ST16x have issues with the ribbon cable on the heater controls.

pull it out, look over with a volt meter, solder as needed
