oh yeah, this is a hybrid 3MZ block with 1MZ heads and electronics. with this setup i should get past the CA BAR to make it a legal swap. once i get the certificate, ill swap in a full 3MZ with a 1MZ VVT intake manifold and dual throttle body and electronics. the VVT 1MZ is still a cable not DBW and it will run the engine no problem.

^ I was gonna ask why you went with 1M stuff on a 3MZ bottom end as everything I found says that the 3MZ makes more power and has a larger TB. So the 3MZ is DBW I assume?

a few reasons. yes the 3MZ is a DWB. but the main reason is to be a legal swap in California. you can only do a swap in a 5 speed that was originally a 5 speed, so leagaly only a full 1MZ (non VVT) is allowed. however because the 3MZ bottom end will work with the 1MZ heads, im sneaking in the extra .3 displacement.

Ok gotcha, so I could run a full 3MZ without too much hassle. Did the 3 only come on autos or something?

yes the 3MZ only came mated to autos. now i did see one of the MR2 guys made an adapter plate and mated a larger TB on the 3MZ intake manifold. its the black plastic manifold but its lighter, less likely for heat soak, and larger runners. then he ran it with 1MZ VVT electronics. Still had to fight auto codes but no DBW issues
