wiper wont turn off till the fuse blows

I just bought an 88 alltrac from Las Vegas and the wipers don't work properly. Fine in Vegas, not so fine in Canada. They come on as soon I put the fuse in, both front and rear. Can't turn them off or switch to intermittent with the lever on the steering wheel. Then if I leave them going for about 5 minutes, the wiper fuse blows. Windshield washer works fine. Anybody had either of these issues?

sounds like your wiper switch has gone south..
