Where to get interior carpeting for ST185?

Postby mike325ci » Mon Apr 16, 2007 4:32 am

Anyone know where I can get replacement interior carpeting (the whole thing for the entire inside of the car, and maybe even the trunk if that's available) for my ST185?

Preferably something that is custom-made so I don't have to do any trimming and whatever. Would appreciate any links in the right direction...

...I figure if I'm not selling my car, I might as well finish my "restoration" and bring the car to tip top shape. :)

Well I know that you cannot get new carpeting from Toyota anymore. They used to have the grey pass compartment, dont think they have offered the trunk area carpet for years.

Let me know if you find someone who makes a replacement set as good as the factory, I have a blue interior and blue carpet wasnt available even when I bought the car in 2001 :(

I ordered from http://www.auto-interior.com/toyota3.htm#Celica and I am about 70% done putting it in the car. It's a lot of work.

There are no holes cut out for anything, so I have to do all that myself with a sharp razor, looking at the old one as an example. And you have to do some trimming of the ends too. And the mold itself is not perfect. I've been taking photos, and will post them so you can see. Basically it's just carpeting, roughly shaped for the car with no holes.

So far I got all the bolts done and have it bolted and installed the car. Only thing left to do is trim the sides where they meet the door sills, re-use the plastic trim thing that is stapled to the stock original ones, and trim the rear section where it tucks under the rear seats. The color is lighter than the stock gray color too, but that's not much a problem, still blends with the rest of the interior.

I do have to say, a nice-fresh-smelling carpeting really gives the old car a "new car smell"... :) :)

Is there something you can get to cover the space left by taking out the rear seats?

oh, it's done as of this past weekend. i put everything back-- seats, trim, etc.. it's not perfect, as there are a few creases and "bunching" of carpeting here and there, but for now it'll do, as i am fed up with working with this stuff and i swear i will never ever do this again. what a big pain in the a.

smells nice in my car though... now onto the brakes and suspension bits...

Do you have any pictures to show of the process or it being finished? I'm curious about it. Bunched up or not, new carpet is nice to have, especially when you can't get a certain stain out, with all the carpet cleaners available.

You think maybe it didnt' fit perfect b/c it said it was for a coupe only? If i'm not mistaken i think the center "hump/bump" is different b/c we have the drive shaft for awd.

Sounds like he didnt get a preformed carpet for the car (coupe or hatchback or whatever). Sound like he got a roll of carpet and put it in. I did this once
on an old Trans Am, what a PITA. I will be very suprised if anyone makes a preformed carpet set for this car.

I wonder if one might just rip up the carpet and then lay down a sheet of carbon fiber. No need for mats then, and easier to clean.

rofl, and i realized looking back at my past posts that i never posted the photos i promised. @..@ sorry! it's been almost 7 years since i've installed that carpeting in my car...

no, it was not a roll. it was molded, but poorly. and yes i think it was for a FWD coupe, so the shape was not perfect. and like i said, i had to transfer over the plastic strips on the sides (goes below door sills) from the old carpet and had to cut all the holes out for bolts, etc. myself. the worst part is the area leading up to the the rear seat cushions-- so the carpet is "loose" there.

let me see if i can find photos on my website...

got a few:
when my heater core blew up: you can see how it looks like in car with seat removed:
http://coruxgroup.com/go/carpix/ST185/h ... 07.JPG.php

getting a wash (you can see that it's molded and has a shape):

and josh, what's the point of covering it in CF? i wanted carpeting. if i were making a race car, then it would just be bare painted metal as-is. no need to "add" CF to it (might give a little bit more structural rigidity to the chassis? would it dampen some of the sound/noise?). looks cool though; never seen that done to the inside of a car before. if the whole chassis/tub was CF, then hell yeah keep it that way (e.g. alfa 4c)

I was thinking of going CF just to give up on poor fitting carpet. I would only be doing it to cover the bare metal and ease of cleaning. I think it could look good if done right. I had been looking at carpet solutions and so far had not seen much. Mine isn't bad, but it only looks good if I get a new set of floor mats.
