St165 vs. FC3S not so good ending...

I was picked up by a friend of mine yesterday and we began to compare our cars on the way back. He had recently bought a 1990 RX7 from a rotary specialist near our neighborhood. Only problem with the car is that at the moment the tires that he is using have very little tread left.

This former owner had taken a shell and turned it into a fast daily driver, it had the power steering and AC completely removed from the car. The 13b was both street ported and constructed from various FC, FD and FE parts, for example i believe the apex seals were from the renesis motor and mods like that. My friend took it to a dyno and was given numbers of about 195hp and similar torque numbers.

So when we got back to my house we decided to mess around a bit with our cars. We pulled onto a 4 lane road and started at about a 25 mph role. After a three count i down shifted to second and took off. I heard my buddy keep up for a moment then die off so a few seconds later i slowed down wondering what happened, and watched him take a separate entrance to our neighborhood looking really pissed.

I talked to him later and apparently what happened was that when we took off he was in third like i was, but in a higher rev. He didn't pay attention to his tach so when he down shifted he went from about 5-6k to around 8k. This made both a horrible sound in his tranny/clutch and caused his tires to completely loose traction. He told me that he swerved into the opposite lane of traffic and nearly hit a pole. (thankfully there were no cars on either side of the street when we went at it)

Now whenever the guy down shifts he can hear a similar grinding sound, and has lost the rest of his tread on his tires. It just goes to show you that street racing is fun, until someone nearly kills them self.

I know its kinda weird, he is usually a pretty good driver with his car. I don't really know what the deal was with that particular time.

Well my bud went off to college the other day and for your freshman year you are not allowed to drive a car, so he is putting it off until maybe next year. Not to smart but it is his car so its his decision.

Are you serious? That's ridiculous. Where is this, and what school?

My thoughts exactly, its at Purdue, West Lafayette in Indiana. Its some sort of traffic and parking space saving measure, pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

Reminds me of parking rules in high school but instead of being 14-15 your 19-20 and nearly everyone at that age around here has a ride.

the first school i went to wouldn't let freshman have a car the first quarter, unless they were from a few hundred miles away or further.

i took my car anyway, and got parking tickets and demerits :p and sometimes i'd just park off campus.

Sounds a lot like many japanese urban areas.

Some colleges don't want their 1st year students with autos because of space and for them to be stuck on campus and studying instead of partying.

If you've ever gone to the UofMN campus in downtown Murderapolis you will know what I mean with both parking spots AND parties... I'd have to pay over $20 to park a day at some lots!
