So what's the NE community like?

Postby lumbercis » Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:55 am

Hi all,

I'm a brand new NE transplant, formerly from the LA area. I'm currently alltracless but plan on getting another one for fun in the near future. My old car is currently being sold by the guy I sold it to if you want to see some pics http://alltrac.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=31537

Anyway, kinda just wanted to say HI! and see what the community is like in the NE?

Big? Small? Are there a lot of members around the DC/NOVA/MD area or is everyone pretty spread out? Does anyone ever meet up to help each other out with their 'tracs? Is anyone into autosports or just keeping their street cars in good shape?

I previously attempted to create a sort of "fix-it crew" back in Cali which you can read about here:
http://alltrac.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=193866#193866
But I think it didn't take off just because the really enthusiastic people were too far apart. Anything past an hour drive seems to kill any chance for regular meet-ups.

I'm currently going back and forth in my mind as to whether I should pick up a true project like this...
http://alltrac.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30506

Or a "get in and go" car like this...
http://alltrac.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=29058 :smokes:

Or maybe split the middle with a "needs a little work" type car.

Well, even though I don't have wheels right now, if anyone needs any help wrenching I'd be more than happy to come over and lend a hand. I'm no expert, but free labor counts for something!

There hardly any tracs in the new England area, more so in NJ,NY,ect.

It's cold here, and I hate it. And our cars are all rusty. We have to work to keep them clean. Seems like everyone in the south can just let them sit for 20 years and they'll brand spankin new.

Did you guys see vip09's (I think it was him, guy from mobile, AL) restore thread on his grey 'trac? He used some kind of por15 type stuff to coat the entire undercarriage of the car. You think something like that would work for weather proofing?

From what you guys are saying I might think twice about purchasing a pristine car in the first place.

There are many products like POR-15 (which locally to me rings in at $46 for a quart), theres Rust Bullet, and I have some stuff called Chassis Saver.

Problem is that all our cars have mostly already started rusting, so it's an uphill battle.

Really? How many active members do you think there are within about an hour of DC?

What part of MD are you in?

Hi

Like Mafix said the MD area has the most by far in NE, but there are actually a decent amount scattered up here, most of them just don't come out much.

We're having a meet May 16 in RI, it will be mostly 6th gens & Scions, but there should be a few Alltracs.

This I would stay away from, it's beyond a fix 'er upper....
I walked away from this car 4? years ago when it was 2 hours from me in CT, it's only gotten worse.

BTW that POR15 stuff is great, but it's not perfect, I coated mine several years ago and have some small patches of rust [prep is key], and don't knock anything that's coated for several days; until it had a chance to fully cure, othewise it will rust through.

And once it is on it's a major PITA to remove, so make sure you want it there.

^Cool, it's good to see there is some interest in heading to the track. You guys are encouraging me to pick up another 'trac sooner rather than later. Seems like you have the makings of a really solid group up here.

Yeah man, we have a good amount of Tracs in the DC area. A couple of us are going to Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia on SATURDAY(for some reason I wrote thursday) to watch some rallycross test and tune with WideFNopen if you wanna tag along. It looks like it might be somewhat of a rainy day, but it will still be a blast I'm sure

*edit* I got my days all screwed up.. lol

Welcome to the Area. We have a good Show/Dragway/Autocross scene. And plenty of gatherings as well. Shouldn't be hard to meet new people.
