Hi all,
Just got an 88 ST165. The car has several modifications will get all those listed once I can get a complete list. The car is amazing or well I should say was amazing. Will try to make the story short as possible. Went to minneapolis to pick up the car. Everything was working fine. Start the drive home to colorado and everything goes well for the first 400 miles. Then the oil pressure starts to drop while cruising on the highway. Stop check oil its low so add a quart. Oil pressure goes back up to normal. Think everything is solved but 120 miles later oil pressure drops again. Insert another quart. This keeps up all the way home, every 120 miles. So ended up adding 4 quarts to get me home. The second part of the problem, about 200 miles left to go and the car starts to overheat. Pull of the road let it idle for a minute and cools back down. Get back on the road everything going well overheats 2 more times the rest of the way home. Any thoughts on what could be going on. having searched the forums sounds like it could be head gasket which makes me  . Oil seems very dark/burned will check coolant for oil tonight but anythought on what might be going on or what to check greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Wade

Oil pump and/or water pump ?
Both are driven off the timing belt.

Could be a stuck thermostat ?

The wiring fuses relays for the fans are also
trouble prone on the ST165. maybe the rad. fan is faling
to come on ?

Check out a few things Before assuming it is the head gasket.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys will check those asap. I don't think its the fan cause the overheating happened while I was crusing at 75 mph and it was 20-35 degrees outside so radiator should be cool on its own. I did have some time to check coolant and it looks like swamp water, brownish green mixture. Possible explanations of oil getting into coolant??

d1alltrac, Thanks the M is awsome but not so fun in the snowy mountians :)

^+1 for a bad headgasket. Also, these cars are prone to oil leaks due to all the heat the seals are exposed to. Is the car leaking anything that you can see? Rear main seals are a common culprit and if they get bad, they can leak rather large amounts.

Thanks for the ideas guys but everything seems to check out except the coolant and oil so all signs point to headgasket. Anybody know of a good mechanic in the Boulder/Denver CO area? Any idea what a fair price is to replace headgasket? I am pretty mechanically inclined but I think this maybe a little above my head.

If you're still looking for mechanical help on your car, give me a PM. I know of someone who might be able to help. A BHG might not be cheap if you want it done, but I know someone who absolutely will do it right.
