New Utard

Hey folks, Dave from Salt Lake City, and I picked up the red AllTrac local to my business partner and I that a few of you saw linked on the FB group.

I am getting into restoring and modifying cars on the side with my partner, and this is the first project we've taken on. It's an all-stock '88 AllTrac, without a single modification that I can see save for a (broken?) boost controller valve on the wastegate hose. There's a whopping 231,000 miles on the clock, and the black leather interior is mostly destroyed. Last registration was in 2007, and I'm told by the folks we picked it up from that it suffered from the typical wiring harness issues over the cam cover and was rear-ended before being parked. The damage didn't look terrible at first glance, but after beginning disassembly out back, it's apparent the hit was HARD. The spare tire area is folded into itself, and the hatch is about an inch away from latching. Rear differential, transfer box, transmission and engine all seem to have some fluid leakage, but was to be expected for sitting near a decade. Fuel tank has a couple inches of gooey varnish at the bottom, and although I haven't pulled it to inspect yet, I'm sure it's damaged from the hit as well. As a bonus though, we picked up a very straight, rust-free '87 GTS parts car with a rebuilt 3S-GE and near-mint blue cloth interior that I intend to rob many body components from.

Since this is planned to be a complete chassis tear-down resto-mod job, I'll be taking some liberties from OE by flat-flooring the hatch area and installing a fuel cell. I want to keep most of the interior, power windows, sunroof and climate control, but I am considering at least a roll bar if I don't build a complete cage. Every single wire will be junked and replaced with a custom motorsport-spec harness built by myself, and stock management will be ditched in favor of Megasquirt. GTS side skirts, trim and rear bumper ala GTS parts donor will find their way on as well as repairing/modifying the front bumper to replicate the GT-Four appearance from outside North America. The ideal goal is to have a 300whp WRC-styled gravel-spec car with comforts.

It'll be a long road, but worth traveling. Thanks for having us, and I'll be sure to update regularly on the progress.

Welcome! Looks like that should keep you busy for a while. Shame you're tearing apart such a clean looking GTS though!
