88 Camry All trac

Please help me with this thing!! I can't find rear struts that fit it. Every pair I've ordered has had the wrong type of threads at the top of the shock's shaft (the part that fits into the strut bushing) and wont fit into the bushings. I can grind one side of the threads down about a third of the shaft's diameter to make it fit but that would be the only way I can think of short of finding out someone actually makes the right part.

Also, the car sways from side to side spontaneously at freeway speeds. What could be causing this?

ALSO, are these cars supposed to be so gutless? It is especially weak at low RPMs. I have to rev it very high before I let the clutch out--otherwise it stalls.

Can anyone help??

This May not be the best forum ?
We mosly have All-Trac Turbo Celicas.
Camrys are rare here.

Toyota ? Only place I could think of for a stock part ?
Possibly from an ST165 88-89 Celica AT.
I assume the suspension is the same, but Big assumption.

I dunno. Suspenisions are getting OLD in all our cars.
Possibly a full coil over set up ? but $$$

Possibly the bad shocks, or your alignment ?
Bad bearings in the drive shaft ? Really bad wheel bend ?

> ALSO, are these cars supposed to be so gutless?

It is pushing a lot of Weight. The AWD set up is HEAVY !. :-(
It IS only a 2L. You could add a turbo ? :-}

Possibly a tune up would solve it or help ? Spark plugs & wires, rotor, cap ...
How is the compression ? How many miles ?
IS this a restoration Project, or Just a winter beater ?
They Are very relaible if taken care of.
But rust has Killed many.

They are Rare, and might be worth sinking
some mods & $$$ into, but if old and rusty is it Worth
saving ?

Good luck.
Sorry I can not be of any Direct help.
Look up More info on numerous Camry boards ?

Regards;

The rear suspension in the Celica and the Camry All-Tracs are nearly identical, so the rear strut for a Celica All-Trac may work for your Camry.

Very worn struts could cause that.

Sounds like my Celica when the cat was clogged up.

If you are looking for a "project", a 3S-GTE should drop right into that Camry.
