what do you do with your Alltrac/GT-Four in the winter?

inspired by the snow thread and wonderfull pictures of our cars in the snow :) I'm wonder how many of us store our cars for the winter and how many drive them.

I have the opportunity to purchase a very very nicelow mileage imported turbo diesel Toyota Hilux Surf(4 runner) at a very attractive price. It would allow me to store my car for the winter which would be nice since my car literally does not have a spec of rust on it that I can find right now(most of the nuts and bolts on the undercarriage aren’t even showing any surface rust yet) it would probably be better on gas to :P

at the same time, my GT-four is OUTSTANDING in the snow. Better then my friends WRX which surprised me, not only that, but it’s a blast to drive year round. I have some cooper winter tires on mine and I have never been in a car that navigates the snow better.

I have the $$$ to by the truck without issue but I intend to move into a house next year and most of my money is tied up for a down payment. I’ve got around 8K or so I set aside to mod my car this summer, but if I purchase this truck my GT-four will have to stay relatively stock for the next little while (1-2 years) unless I decide to hold off on the house for another year(I am only 22, and single)

So, I need to decide if I want to mod my car and really have fun with it, but be stuck driving a moddded car around year round as my only car and daily driver. Or if I want to spend that Money on a car I don’t have to worry about in the winter, but then be stuck with a relatively timid car come summer. I now turn to the people of alltrac.net to help me decide :)

Keep in mind that I live in Winnipeg, We normally have a lot of snow from October to march and it gets very, very cold in the winter, -30C is the norm, which is hard on cars in itself, and we use salt and sand to clean the roads.

insight is appreciated :)

I drive my car daily, but i think next year im going to get some sort of winter beater mostly cause i don't trust other drivers on the road. however, the choice is between a newer car and a loan, or a used car where i can pay cash. ill still probably take it out on the weekends in the winter. luckily my new place has a two car garage...

Drive it. Dunlop Winter Sport M3's are your friend.

Lots of fast, loud things.

i've got no complains about its winter abilities, I've got cooper wintermasters on it, and they are supriseingly awesome!

I'm just worried about my baby :( it took me half a year to get it over from japan and I've never in my life seen a 15 year old car that wasn't restored in this condition, shy if the big scratch on the hood I need to get painted and a cigarette burn on the seat from the previous owner its flawless.

at the same time, I feel like a pansy storying a rally car :P

In most cases, I'd say drive it... but most cars that age have seen better days. In your case, I'd say store it and get another All-Trac in "less flawless" condition to drive as a winter beater.

I like my ecstas in the winter. Snow driving on summer tires FTW.

Hopefully the new BFG Comps will be better

I want snows.

Mine is broken, so its a driveway drifter for now, covered in snow. I wish I could be driving it, since I just put 235 wide Falken on my RX7, and it hated snow even before that.

Whether it was a good idea or not, I got the 165 as a daily driver. But I;ve had it since July, and its been towed to a shop once, and to my house 3 times, and has run a total of a month maybe. Sad face.
Currently All Trac-less....

I'm really excited to feel the 245's in the snow :) It already doesn't really like the snow, and it's got less aggressive 215's.

If you can afford it, go for that 4Runner - you'll love it! 8)
my ST185 is a DD right now, but I'd like to have a some kind of Toyota jeep too :D
sometimes I miss my TLC BJ70 so badly... :(

I didn't want to part with my trac, but now I have a sebring as a daily drver, and I love the feeling that the alltrac can be whatever it wants to be, I know it can be down and out for a while, and it knowns it's special. And considering yours is in mint shape, I would say get another daily for sure, just wait to mod it, it's still fast, and this way when you do mod it, it can be down for a while, and you can do it right.
