You can take the intake off and feel the impeller (on the cold side).

If you can wiggle the impeller, you have shaft play.

In/Out is bad.

Side to Side, is sometimes OK.

There are gauges to measure the distance it travels to tell whether it's "in spec".

Some go by the principal that any shaft play is too much shaft play though.

As mentioned, check the cold side.

What I go by is that a tiny bit of side to side okay as it's a sleeve bearing for lack of a better definition so the oil pressure will "center" it and keep it right. Any in/out play is bad.

Soooo yall are saying the stock turbo on my vr4 with about half an inch of play is bad??

In/Out~ BAD
Side/Side~ very little ok but keep it in mind
Side/Side~ anything more than a tiny bit is bad
