This car needs alot of odds and ends(new exhaust since it was all welded together as 1 piece with stock pipe, wheel bearings, bushings, etc). So I do think it makes more sense to go mostly stock so I have a chance of getting her running sooner rather then later.

Then definitely go gen4.
The ST215/245 engine is the most powerful, smoothest, nicest driving, fuel efficient and most reliable of the lot.
An opened/rebuilt engine will never be as reliable as a good unopened factory engine.

Yes, you'll have to do a little extra work for wiring and intake, but they are far simpler tasks than going through the whole routine of re-building an engine.

Someone mentioned the lack of gen4 part availability... that is a non-issue.
If you can't find a part in the US, you can have it on the your doorstep from Japan in ~1 week, and at a comparable, or lower cost to getting it in the US (use amayama.com).

Well, the last 2 posts I think have helped me to decide to just go for the 4th gen. Mostly cause on eBay they are cheaper then a damn 2nd gen motor.

Modifying the hood isn't a big deal for me. Plus the fact this car is just a winter driver(for now), if it needs a part, I can park her.

Anyone know if my flywheel and clutch from my first gen will work fine with a 4th gen? Thats my biggest concern for now since I could have sworn I heard all the trans bolt to each of the different gens of 3sgte.

Also, for just straight up mechanical aspect, is most of the cooling lines pretty straight forward?

And guess I will sort this all out now. Just pulled the trigger on a 4th gen 3sgte. 1050 total(with shipping) since no one appears to ship to utah for free lol.
