ST205 transmission questions

Postby RallyX-GT4 » Tue Sep 18, 2012 4:32 am

So I am planning on upgrading my ST165 with a 205 transmission. But I need to know the following:
1) Do I use the 165 slave cylinder or do I need one specifically for the 205?
2) I believe the drive gear is different. I think one from the MR2 is compatible. Is this correct?
3) Since I am looking at having this shipped, how much do these things weigh? I've heard anywhere from 90 to 200 pounds. If I'm going to get an accurate quote, I need to have a pretty good idea.
Any help/info would be greatly appreciated!

We recently swapped a 205 trans into a JDM 165. The only bit we needed to change was the speedo drive - the 165 uses a mechanical drive while the 205 has an electronic pickup. We simply took the speedo drive out of the old 165 box, and fitted it to the 205 box. Other than that it bolted straight on to the 165 motor. We used 165 axles & rear drive shaft, and the 165 slave cylinder, and it works fine (actually it's fantastic). Other than oil, we didn't have to buy anything to fit the gearbox. We did replace the clutch, but with the same model.

I didn't weigh the trans, but when we were moving it around & fitting it, I estimated it to be around 90 kg - or 200 lbs. It is very heavy. We mated it to the motor with the motor standing upright - ie the timing belt end down. The trans was lowered on using an engine crane.

Thank you! I appreciate the reply. I didn't realize that my mechanical pickup for the speedo drive would "plug" into the 205 trans.
I already have a new clutch master cylinder on the way. I will add a new 165 slave along with a steel-braided line for the trans.
As for the weight, that rules out some of my shipping options.
Again, thank you for the informative reply!
