Trans interchangeability

Postby New Guy » Thu Nov 29, 2012 8:45 pm

I searched and searched in the hopes I could find a clear answer to my question...

From what I've read, an ST185 transmission will bolt into an ST165. From prior knowledge, I'm aware that the SV25 (Camry) used the same transmission as the early-model ST165... So does this mean that I could use an ST185 flywheel with an SV25/ST165 transmission? I'm neck-deep rebuilding a 3S-GE to stick into my Camry but don't want to mess up the flywheel. I'd just reuse the stock one, but it weighs ~130% what the ST185 one does and I'm also not entirely sure it's an 8-bolt flywheel...

tl;dr: Will an SV25 transmission have issues with the starter gear mesh if an ST185 flywheel is swapped in?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Also, how hard to find are the vacuum-locked center diffs? Mine will be going for sale when I get my VCU installed and I'm all for giving good prices.

It'll be fine. The 3rd gen 3s-gte has slightly redesigned flywheel teeth, but all others are 100% compatible. Even the ST205 vs. earlier stuff still works, just makes a bit of noise on engagement.

Thanks much. I was stressing out because there's a solid 1.5" difference in diameter of the two flywheels.
