Any updates? This is one build I always check on when I venture into the forum.
May be moving on from the All Trac world.

Nothing much to report, I haven't had much time to work on the car... I installed a new fuel filter and started cleaning up a few things around the engine bay. I've really only spend a couple hours on it since the last post. I have a pretty detailed list of things left to do at my house, then its off to my buddies shop for intercooler and exhaust work. If I focus on the car (should be a bit easier after the holidays), I can hopefully have it back on the road in Feb/March. (yay California - no taking cars of the road for winter!)

Ha! I have enough cars to take care of already... (spent 7 hours last night after work replacing the alternator in my wife's Mini Cooper S - the Alltrac seems so easy after that!)

As for the Alltrac, I have the interior back together. I found the problem and a solution for the poor shifter feel I had in my old FWD 3s-gte Camry - this shift cable length needed to be adjusted. Luckily, I was able to re-drill the bracket on the trans to get everything lined up. The shifter lever is in a better place and now re-centers itself in neutral correctly.

At this point I have a few small things to wrap up, fluids to add, then time to test fire it after more than a year without my Alltrac. Then its off to a buddy's shop for exhaust and intercooler work.

Not sure how time passes so quickly... but I'm back working on the Alltrac again.

Lots of little uninteresting things done: Driver's door handle fixed, Right ball joint fixed, Coil+igniter mounted, wiper arms painted, cruise control actuator mounted (moved due to oil filter relocation), headlights/corner lights installed, cooling fan switch installed, oil change completed.

And the visible progress, the intercooler!

Image

The Camry doesn't have room to run piping around through the fenders or under the radiator support (Celica style), so the piping is going in to the engine bay on each side of the radiator (still have to cut the holes, the intercooler has rear outlets). I'm currently in the middle of modifying the bumper beam to clear the intercooler. The intercooler is mounted as far back as it can go and still clear the A/C system, and its as high as it can go and clear the headlights and bumper cover. Luckily, it just clears the lower valence (not pictured)

I'll be doing the charge pipes and exhaust modifying at my buddies shop once everything else is done: Wiring fix at the fuse box, trans fluid and the rest of the intercooler mounting. Its getting very close to its first drive in almost 2 years...

After almost two years, it back running:

Woo hoo! Now, to finish up the rest... intercooler piping, exhaust and whatever other little things I find.

The Alltrac is finally out of the garage, at my buddy's shop...

Out in front of the house, waiting for the tow:

On the truck:

On the lift, exhaust getting fitted/modified.

Its an eBay ST185 downpipe-back exhaust. It needs a bit of work lengthening the over-axle section and the front section of the cat-back to fit the chassis. Also, due to my previously slightly modified downpipe (to clear the front swaybar on the Camry) the midpipe flange needs to get clocked a bit. Sadly, we ran out of gas in the welder, so the exhaust will get finished another day.

After that, we weld a couple pipes for the intercooler and it'll be back on the road!

I shudder to think how the stupid-simple front suspension in this is going to handle the power.
Its bad enough in my VZV21.

Haha... yeah, you don't think that a combo swaybar/toe link is good for suspension geometry? I don't know why Toyota went this way, as they already were making the Celica standard A-arm setup... I think the only advantages are adjustable caster. I can also use the roll-center adjusters from the MR2 (the front suspension in this is essentially the same as the rear MR2 suspension).

This is the front lower setup from my FWD 3s-gte Camry. The front bar is a 27mm Whiteline (up from the factory 24mm) and all the bushings are polyurethane otherwise. In the FWD Camry, it had crappy Intrax springs and Tokico blue inserts. The only problem that I really had with that was bump steer and no bump travel because the car was too low. This car is about 1" higher and handles much better with the Tein suspension on there.

Its not ideal but I've shown an STI a thing or three around a corner on more than one occasion. Would something less primitive be better, of coarse, but this setup works better than it looks. That dost mean I haven't been looking into something better.

Plenty of clearance over the front crossmember (after slight modification):

Image

We also put in a 3" high flow cat. The exhaust is quiet! The open compressor side of the turbo makes as much noise as the exhaust. We still need to finish up the bit that goes over the axle (just a bit too close to the CV boot). Its a little tough to fit in work on the car between paying customers.

Then its on to the intercooler pipes, which should go much faster. I can't wait to get driving it.
