LMK if you need any help/have issues with it. Im the original owner... still have a few parts laying around.

It's def. coming along and I'll probably be reaching out to you as I begin to reassemble things and put the a/c back in - this is HOTlanta. Shoot me an IM on what you have left.. I think the prev. owner had good intentions with the car, but I can see how it could be overwhelming.. Do you still have pic of the car on the track?

3sgtenavyman wrote:WOW, looks awesome just as good as I remember in high school. LMK if you need help, I helped Andrew build the car twice, mostly over the phone the second time - Just glad the car went to some one that’s going to respect the car

I'll def be reaching out for help when the time comes. I gotta say that the work done to the car was pretty good, so it's making my job a lil easier. Just getting parts together for now, but hopefully within the month I'll be ready to assemble the motor.

Yeah i got a box of shit around here somewhere.... jonathan has the rest of the parts (3sgtenavyman) at his place. Ill take a look when i get a chance.

Oh yeah, i got a f*** load of pics from autox, track, dragstrip...etc. May even have the 12.88 1/4mile slip from when it was on the 185 motor with a ct20b.

Any updates?[/quote

Been a pretty busy year, but I'm now focused on moving the project forward. I decided against using the 3rd gen 3sgte block, or any 3sgte block for that matter and went with an '01 5sfe block instead. I got a set of Wiseco stroker pistons (88mm bore), so now I just need to send the block w/pistons to the machine shop to be bored. Also in the process of making another intake manifold using a "D" plenium and shorter runners (Plenium will sit lower in the bay). I've got all the parts to do the turbo manifold and just need to build a jig to hold the turbine housing in place so I can start tacking it together. Picked up a really nice divided collector and 44mm vband wastegate to make things a little easier. All that's left are engine bearings, HV oil pump, and a larger set of injector (gonna start with the 850cc I currently have. I'm really looking forward to assembling the engine soon.

Cant believe it's been a year since I've updated this thread, so just posting some updates regarding the car. The goal was to turn this car into the AllTrac I've always wanted, and as you can see that takes time. I had an opportunity to pick up another 165 that was already pretty much what I wanted this car to be, not to mention it was a single owner car with quite a bit of history. With that said, this car has since been passed on to a close friend here on the forum who will continue developing the car; he'll create a build page to consolidate all this. I'm currently working to complete this car, although the build is now a bit more realistic and practical (still 3rd gen).

I've spent the last few months building the motor, head and turbo system as time has allowed. Here's a summary of the progress:

* 3rd gen head was refreshed with new valve seals, Engle springs and held down with ARP head studs
* 3rd gen block was hot tanked, honed, Eagle rods and Arais pistons (86mm) installed with ACL main and rod bearings
* New oil pump, water pump, thermostat, timing belt & tensioner, seals (mains, cams, etc...), all new gaskets (including 3rd gen head gasket)
* Holset HY35 was upgraded from a 54mm comp wheel to a 60mm HX40 wheel (still 9cm turb. hsg)
* Fabbed wastegate adapter to still run oem manifold heatshield

I'm sure there is some other things I'm forgetting, but I'm definately grateful that the car came with a full 3rd gen engine rebuild kit. Just need to put the engine on a cradle and install the flywheel/clutch/tranny and then focus on getting her back in the car. from there it's just re-installing the engine harness (with a slight tuck) and re-tuning the Haltech for E85. Still need to install the fuel rail and injectors (1000cc). Anyway, here are a lot of pics of the progress:

How she currently sits..

Head prepped for re-assembly

I was able to move the shims around (bottom right), in order to keep in the center of the tolerances
Image

Bare block after hot-tank and hone; they actually chased all the bolt holes at no additional cost
Image

Dont you just love squirters :D
Image

Installed

Crank installed and main torqued
Image

Image

Checking ring-gap after filing the rings; gap set to .020
Image

Ready to install the rings and drop them in the bore
Image

Image

It's a shame these will be hidden by the head :(
Image

ARP studs installed
Image

Image

Rod caps torqued down. I'm using Permatex Assembly Lube if anyones wondering (very sticky)
Image

Image

Suction tube and windage tray installedAint she purdy? :D
Image

Upper oil pan installed
Image

Lower oil pan installed
Image

Image

Image

Head back together. I used Redline assembly lube to keep the keepers on the valve stems (worked well)
Image

Cut my finger on the corner of the head and bled all over it.. J/K it the Permatex assembly lube :P
Image

Cams/gears installed and torqued
Image

Running stock 3rd gen cams for now, but we may pick up some additional HP by playing with them on the dyno.
I have a set of new GSC 268s on the shelf just in case
:D
Image

Turbo is a Holset HY35/40 (9cm hsg). I'm very curious how it will spool and perform mid-range and up top
Image

Image

The owner wanted a stock'ish look, so I'm fabbing the wastgate lacation to keep the OE heatshield
Image

Image

Image

Came out pretty good. It'll be open vent..
Image

Image

Gotta fab up the 3" downpipe and w/g dump tube; almost there
Image

Image

Image

A few things left to install

Re-plenum Manifold (Q45 tb)
Image

Competition Clutch Stg-4 kit w/ Flywheel (steel)
Image

T-Netics intercooler (garrett core)

Wow! Just shy of 2 years since my last update; doesn't seem that long. Well I was able to really enjoy the white 165 last summer, so I committed to myself not to touch it again until this car is completed. I've been doing a little here and there since this Spring and have really had time to get a good amount done in the last month or so. Below is a list of what I was able to get done in the last few months:
drop the old 3rd gen shortblock/tranny
    remove and clean/paint tranny
delete battery tray and pressure clean/paint the engine bay
Install L/W flywheel and clutch kit
bolt tranny to engine (what a pita!)
    install fuel rail/injectors (880cc)/-6an lines
swap cam gears (gold to blue)
fab throttle cable bracket on intake plenum and re-drill Q45 flange for mustang TB
re-angle wastegate to clear alternator (it cleared the alt itself but not the harness plug; I hated to move it!
    fab downpipe and dump tube
    fab bracket for OE heatshield
laid out harness in prep for the wire tuck

I'm sure there's more, but that's the bulk of it. My goal is to finish the car withing the next 30 days and have both cars ready for the tentative Dragon run this fall.. The major stuff left is to convert the steering rack to manual, re-run/tuck the harness, install engine/tranny, build the mid/rear exhaust sytem, fab intercooler/piping.. Anyway on to the pics..

Image

Got the battery tray removed; the air chisel mode quick work of it!
Image

Years of caked on dirt/grime pre-soaked in Simply Amazing; that stuff is, well, simply amazing!
Image

Power-washed/painted
Image

Big difference!
Image

Ready for the engine..
Image

Tranny after soaking in SA (Simply Amazing) and a power-wash. That stuff is $1 a bottle at the Dollar Store and I usually clean them out. It's just as good as Purple Power imho.
Image

Image

Image

After 2 years, she's coming of the engine stand!
Image

I was a bit nervous.. easy does it..
Image

Clutch setup installed (CM L/W flywheel and ACT 6 puck sprung)
Image

Getting ready to mount the tranny to the block
Image

Image

Mounted and ready to go!
Image

Next was the fuel rail. I wanted the lines somewhat hidden and in/out on the drivers side for a direct run to the FPR.
Image

Image

The rail is drilled for 11mm injectors, so I'm running 14mm to 11mm hats in order to run 14mm injectors. You can see them between the rail and the injectors
Image

Image

Finally it was time to fab the throttle cable bracket, down pipe and dump tube. I know I keep saying it, but I really need a TIG! they're just so pricey, but I'm gonna bit the bullet soon.
Throttle cable bracket ready to be welded; had to use a buddy's TIG to weld it up

Image

Image

Image

Image

Here you can see how the oil-drain was routed. The dp will be wrapped and the oil line in a heat sleeve as well.
Image

All welded up.. I decided to add a flex on the dp vs. the midpipe
Image

final step was to add the o2 bungs
Image

Finally finished. The owner wanted a clean "stock'ish" look, so I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I'm looking forward to laying out the intercooler piping and semi-tucking the wiring.
Image

Turbo is a Holset hy35 w/hx40 comp wheel. The 9cm hsg should spool really well and the hx40 wheel should make good pump gas pwr

Yeah, I've been heads down working on it while I have the time. I'm working on extending the harness now in prep for the tuck, but you'll see the progress next time you stop in. Trying to get both cars ready for the Fall run in the mountains. How's Cornbeef coming along?

zaluss wrote:Need more info on those wilwood brakes! :D

It's the Rocketeer kit that was sold by 935Motorsport a while back. I'll eventually get around to copying the brackets and posting the rotor/hats specs for anyone that want to put a set together. it's a simple setup as far as the caliper and adapters are concerned, but the hats/rotors are a bit hard to find. should be easy to duplicate once the offsets are known. They're currently on the white car btw.
