I think you are tempting fate by having those two huge "TOW" stickers on the front bumper  ;)

Any in car video?

The video is coming I promise haha

Maybe it was the "tow" decals that ruined my engine haha.. To bad the rules make me identify all tow points :(

Ok guys, more bad news. I bore scoped the engine and it seems cyl #3 and maybe 2 have some melted pistons

So 2.5 hours after viewing that, I got to this point

So here is where I'm stuck and I could really use everyone's help here. Do I build my engine with forged pistons and better rods, ect.... Or do,I just try and find a stock replacement? Both options will be about the same amount of money. I already have a MLS head gasket and ARP's on the way to me. Oh and my tranny grinds 2nd and 3rd so I would like to get a 205 tranny in it..

Any suggestions, comments, advice, is much appreciated :)

First off, sorry to hear that. What a bummer.
Secondly, this is the slippery slope that all All-Trac owners face - fix/improve/upgrade older stock engines or upgrade to a newer variant (205) that will potentially have more parts avaiable for a longer period of time.
Not sure if you're looking to do an entire engine swap or not. If no, I believe you can get away with forged pistons only (and refreshing all of the necessary bits of course) as long as you're not going to be pushing crazy boost.

Since you're racing it, I'd get a replacement engine of the same generation so that you can swap when things like this happen and work/rebuild on an engine stand instead of in the engine bay and have minimal downtime. Plus the more spares the better.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Welcome to GT4 alltrac racing. Melted pistons. Been there, done that twice. Stock bottom end should be enough for ice. You need proper pistons, 550 cc injectors, metal head gasket and ARP hardware and most importantly a proper ECU with a tune by a specialist in that type of racing. Drag race tuners will not do. Manual boost controller will not do. All my Toyota knoledge and my last proper engine comes from exTTE engine specialist in UK. By myself I know very little. FMIC will help as well. Stock intercooler is hell. Also fuel cell and pumps will help.

+1

Makes the most sense to get you up and running quick with time to rebuild.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

After much debate and thought, i have decided that since i have missed one race already and now im out of the points race that i could afford to have a bit of down time. i bought a 3rd gen engine and tranny and it should be here tomorrow or Friday. i am going to do my best to get it up and running before Sunday but i know it is probably not going to happen.

My head gasket, studs, and thermostat showed up from ATS but now with the 3rd gen the only thing i can use are the studs. ill be selling the gasket and thermostat so keep an eye out in the For Sale section.

I want to do some things before the new engine goes in the car. I am going to assume that the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump are the same as the 2nd gen? because the dealer here doesn’t have any listing of a 3SGTE after 93. I have been doing nothing but reading the last few days about this swap and didn’t see anything about that. Also if anyone can help me out with the ECU pinout for and ST205 or anything related to wiring, i would really appreciate that. I have everything wire related for the 90 all-trac but nothing for the 3rd gen.

as always, here are some pics because everyone loves pics haha

Just a little lean lol

gen 3 belt is different, HG is different, water pump is different, and I think the tensions er is different. You should have called me before you bit the bullet! I've got the pin outs you will need. The wiring isnt to tricky, you will need to fool the ECU into thinking you have the WTA pump there using a resistor. I just bought and MR2 ECU so i didn't have to deal with that.

Timing belt = different
Tensioner = same
Idler = same
Water pump = same (get the gen3 GrpA plastic impeller water pump if you can)
Water pump housing = different

please keep in mind that this was the very first practice event with the car as well as the very first time i drove the car. The granny shifting was because the sincros are pootched lol and it was only practice, passengers are not allowed during the race :) oh yes and i do test out the effectiveness of the bank lol

comments welcome!

Enjoy

Ive read somewhere that a Corolla AE92 rack is quicker? i would like to find one of those while the engine is out.

Hey Guys,

the engine and trans showed up on Saturday so i started tearing into it. It seems i have everything except for the MAP sensor, if anyone has one or know if i can use the one from my 2JZ that would help me out. Also the tranny looks like it has been apart at some point becasue the sealant isnt factory, this could be good or bad. Good if it recently rebuilt and fresh bearings etc, BAD if the guy doing it was a hack.

Most of you guys know this but i figure i might as well put some info into this thread for anyone looking to do this swap.

- The alternator plug and alternator bracket on the head are different, so i am using the 205 bracket and the 185 alternator, i had to drill out the threads on the alternator to make it work as the 205 bracket is threaded and the 185 bracket is not. basically this is because the bolt on the 205 goes --------> and the 185 bolt goes <-------- (if that makes sense haha)
- The starter also has a different plug on it, so we just cut the clip off the 205 harness and put it on the 185 harness as i wanted to use the 205 starter because the lower miles.
- The throttle bodies are different as well. the 185 is 2 and 1/4 and the 205 is 2 and 1/2. If i cant get my custom intercooler made in time then i am going to have to figure out how to adapt my 185 TMIC to this engine.
- The 185 harness where it sits in the intake manifold doesnt quite fit that nice becasue the 205 has the Fuel Pressure Reg is on the timing cover side and the 185 had the FPR on the tranny side. it fits but its not perfect.
- There are some solenoids on the back of the 205 block that seem to control the anti-lag system, i am not sure if i can delete this or?
- I got the 185 downpipe to fit by taking out the extra stud on the 205 turbo. seems to be ok
- The power sterring pumps seem to be the same. I had to take the adapter off the 205 pump for the banjo fitting, then bolted the 185 banjo directly onto the pump. fits perfectly.

I will keep updating this information as i go on.

Time for pics!
