Dred's Rahtid 165

Postby GT4_DRED » Fri Mar 22, 2013 3:56 pm

So last summer (2012) I was lucky enough to purchase Perry's st165, which he's owned since new in 1988  . The car then stay at my buddy Frantz' (gt4times2) until earlier this month when I was able to trailer it from S. Florida to N. Georgia. I'm pretty excited about the car and the opportunity to continue adding to the history and reputation it already has.

My goal for the car is simply for it to reflect my taste, while making it "better, stronger, faster"; not easy or cheap considering that Perry only used the best of what was available at the time the car was being developed (circa 1990's through early 2000's). I'm really challenging myself to see how far I can develop the car, in it's entirety, while preserving it's original identity/personality (hafi keep it raw!). I haven't been able to resist fondling her, so I've done some changes already; just to keep myself sane! I'll update and share my progress as time permits and will try to answer some of the questions we've all had over the years about the previous build :)

Here is the list of mods on the car when I got it, but keep in mind that most of these were done back in the day. The engine was recently rebuilt and has ~300 miles on it:
    -Toyomoto 2.2L stroker
    -Toyomoto custom fuel rail

    -PBR red rear pads
    -Accel 850cc injectors
    -HKS 272 cams
    -Race ported and polished head
-TVIS removed and ported to match head
    -Shimless bucket conversion
    -Coolant passages enlarged in head
    -Ferrea valve springs
    -Ferrea titanium retainers
    -Dual Walbro 255 fuel pumps
    -8 from tank > -8 filter > Aeromotive FPR > Dual -8 feed to rail w/ -6 return
    -Mocal oil cooler
-HKS 3 core front mount intercooler
-Greddy type-r BOV (replaced with Turbonetics Raptor BOV)
-3" turbo back to Magnaflow 3" muffler (very loud, but sounds sooo good!)

Snapped these pics last summer in S. FL when I first got her.

So the car was previously tuned on 110 unleaded and I'll be switching to E85 in a few months so I decided to install a wideband I already had (NGK AFX). I'm switching to 93 pump fuel while I spend some time learning to tune on the E6k, so the wideband is a must. I figure if I can tune the E6k's DOS based software, then I should be comfortable once I install a newer system. I've been spending most of my time on cold start enrichment, after making the timing maps a lot more conservative. Next I'll focus on part throttle and off-boost response but I like how she now starts in 30 - 40 degree weather :) . I'm using a my mig for welding, but it's getting it done. Hopefully I'll get a TIG by the time I'm ready to do a full teardown on the car; I hate having to depend on anyone to do fab work for me.

Decided to install the upgraded front brakes (Rocketeer kit) yesterday; what a pita to bleed! Next step is to install the ST205 rear brakes. Had a pleasant surprise while installing the brakes; the car came with ABS (deleted), which means it should have the larger 1" master cylinder. Hopefully that should make the Wilwood front/St205 rear combo play nice together :)

Installed.. Those are 18" wheels BTW, so the rotors should fill the 17s nicely once I throw them on.

So my plan is to eventually pull the engine/tranny/wiring, do a wire-tuck, smooth and respray the car/engine bay, replace bushings with poly, install the current head on a 98+ 5s based oversquare setup I have waiting, and install some other parts I've been saving. Well a week ago I got the itch and decided to delete some of the pwr steering lines, clean up that side of the chassis and replace the 42mm Racegate with a Tial 44 and reroute the dump tube behind the turbo. In the middle of that little project, I decided to go ahead and pull the T-64 and install the Comp 6765 I've had sitting. The turbine wheels were the same so it made swapping in the 6765 a lot easier, as I reused the .70 divided housing. I decided to get a longer oil feed line and had to change the drain line a bit to accommodate the dump tube running behind the turbo. My hope is with the billet compressor wheel and ball bearings the 6765 will out-spool the T-64. I've done a few quick pulls while adding fuel and at 10psi on 93 pump, it definately feels stronger than the T-64 did at 15psi on 110 fuel. Spool is also about 500 rpm better (~4200rpm), but that's also with very conservative timing. Cant wait to install the larger injectors and E85, but I need to pick up a 55 gal drum for refills, since the closest station is 35 mins away.. Eventually I build a proper twin-scroll manifold and go with a larger a/r on the hotside, but all that wont happen until I pull the motor; gotta say I'm a bit nervous with the 6765 and this 3s block :( . Oh, and just a bit of back story. I've collected quite a bit of parts over the last 2 years to build on another Alltrac that I had waiting. Most of those parts will eventually make it on this build, so you'll hear me reference a part "I've had sitting" quite a bit. Here are some pics:

I've used VHT's FlameProof header paint in the past with pretty good success on turbine housings and downpipes; never tried it on a manifold. Said "what the heck" and went for it, so we'll see how the manifold holds up everything was baked on in stages as recommended.

Much cleaner..

Decided to do the valve cover as well; I already knew I would be using the same color on the brake calipers/hats. I also re-routed the throttle cable to run behind the intake manifold; feels just as smooth and looks cleaner..

Looks excellent.

I too have the same rocketeer BBK, any idea on how to get replacement rotors? Mine aren't in great shape... Im a bit worried I may need to have to have custom ones made...

Thanks.. I looked into getting a set of extra rotors and only found a couple of options: Coleman can do a custom setup (Coleman Racing) and funny enough, Full Tilt has a very similar setup for mustangs and will sell just the pair of rotors (Full Tilt Boogie Racing). Seems like its getting harder to find 13" 7-bolt hat mounted rotors these days and they're pricey. Let me know if you find a better solution.

Well, I made a few more changes to the car since the last post and it's finally starting to look like "my" car :D . Here is a list of the changes:

* Moved battery to the trunk, deleted battery tray, relocated fuse box and cleaned up wiring
* Pulled nitrous system (lines, solenoids, tank, etc..). I didn't realize the bottle was full; would've tried it before pulling it :shoots:
* Swapped Accel coil for msd
* Rewelded upper intercooler pipe so it sits better in the bay, deleted extra hose/clamps and moved bov forward
* Rewelded lower piping to line up with the upper
* Replaced greddy type-r bov with turbonetics raptor (lower profile and sounds better imho)
* Replaced all 10 worm clamps with t-bolt clamps
* Cleaned up tranny and starter (as much as could be done with them in the car)
* Relocated ebc solinoid box
* Rewelded exhaust to change the angle of the muffler (muuuch better)
* Redid interior and added momo pedals, dead pedals, shift knob, steering wheel and ebrake handle

The 18" wheels are really growing on me. Was planning on 17's but I'm really torn now

I don't really know what to say man. :notworthy: You work full time, married, kids, and still time for a few All-Tracs. Just, email me the formula. :) I need it. I can't stop saying it, you're doing a great job with the car. Keeping it tasteful, subtle to your tastes and upgrades. Ebony is going to be mad soon. Gotta give her some kinda love sooner or later.

Thanks! I'm liking the outcome and it's good for now, well except for a set of wheels. I've really got to turn my attention to the other two cars and clear the driveway a bit. lol.. Forgot to add the pics of the battery's new location.

Went from 215/35/18 on all four corners to 225/40/18 rears and 215/40/18 fronts. I'm sure I can fit 235s out back with the spring perch trimmed down, the Ground Control setup, and no spacers (currently running 20mm); the 225s will fit the front easy.
