That sexy manifold. I need to get my car down to TN and we can all ride the back roads together.

Re: Dred's Rahtid 165 - 2016 Updates

Postby GT4_DRED » Tue Jan 05, 2016 7:11 pm

Been busy working on the car the last few months, so here's a bit of an update on whats been happening. changed fuel rail in late summer and unknowingly pinched two of the injector seals, which led to a lean condition. Two pistons were melted and the head got a bit damaged as well. Decided to go late model 5s block, rebuild the head, go full sequential, and install the Electromotive TEC3 I had sitting for a bit. I also took the opportunity to put a new pad on the flywheel and clean up the wiring with a tuck. Here's the progress so far:

Pinched Injector seals that led to the pistons melting..

Image

2001 5S block modded for diff housing clearance. Notice that there are no mounting points for the diff-to-block bracket on the far right
Image

Image

Holes drilled for the bracket (pictured). They were tapped later.
Image

Image

Head repaired w/ 1mm o/s Ferrea comp valves, dual springs (head modded to fit the seats) and new shim-less buckets
Image

Image

Image

Image

Rotating components and assembly
Image

Difference in the wrist pin walls (new vs. old)

TEC3 setup, related setup and custom harness. Built the relay/fuse/power harness vs. paying the $130. My cost was $22
Image

Image

60-2 and cam trigger setup from Racerx allowing for full sequential
Image

Image

Image

Decided to do a quick disconnect bulkhead setup to ease pulling the motor and tuck the harness
Image

Believe it or not, the harness on the left is all that will be on the engine (less the alternator, wideband and EGT harness)
Image

Decided to ditch the re-plenum manifold, so picked up the RacerX kit on Black Friday
Image

Image

Image

Will be SCCA'ing the car this season, so went with a smaller PTE 5857 billet dbb turbo vs. the 6266 dbb. Looking to give the EVOs and Subies HELL!
Image

Completed and ready for install

Just like Perry, I can't stop looking at the pics on the phone. Coming along!! And strong! Making me feel like I'm at a standstill with the other two. If this and other projects aren't inspiring, I don't know what is. Keep it up.

Looks great. When my Alltrac was white I painted my valve cover a very similar color. I loved it in a white car.

What size injectors? And what type of fuel? I can send you my TEC3 map and tweak it for your stuff. It should get you to be able to start the car and drive decent right away. Obviously you'll have to make changes but it would be a great base tune to work off of.

Didn't realize you did a color change on your car; there's no evidence of white that I've seen.

I'm still planing to reach out to you regarding building the plug wires, but I saw that you've gone back to the Magnecor; I know you hated the color in the past. I have a set of universal Taylor 8.8s (blk), so hopefully those will work for the time being. On the old setup I was running the timing map I got from you and it worked really well, while still being conservative. I have access to both 104 oct and E85, but want to get familiar with the system using 93 and 104 first. I'm running a set of 1500cc for now until I decide on 2200cc or a dual rail setup using injectors I already have. I already have the extra rail and injectors, so it would just be a matter of getting the bosses and fabbing it up. I would definitely appreciate help getting it setup and running while I learn to navigate the system.

Making some progress on the car, but between work/home and being a bit anal with the build, it's taking a while  . I didnt want to mount anything forward of the shock towers, so It made for limited real-estate. Finally picked up a tig welder as well :D

Image

Image

Image

Redid the wiring, since its over 25 years old and took the opportunity to do a tuck as well
Image

Image

Image

22 pin bulkhead connector (connects to the engine harness to make removing the motor easier)
Image

Not fully seated..
Image

Image

Completed the fuse and relays for the standalone and mounted up the FPR
Image

Didn't want to weld a TB bracket to the manifold, so I fabbed up one that mounts using one of the TB mounting bolts. Also wanted the cable to be somewhat hidden
Image

Image

Image

Image

Took a while to figure out a location for the DFU (coils) and had to fab a bracket for them
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Next was figuring out a place for the catch can and fabbing a bracket
Image

Image

Painted white to help the bracket disappear on the tower
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Should be able to get it done in the next few weeks and will try to keep the updates coming!
