blown engine now what 5sfe?

Postby donnyavery » Sun Aug 05, 2012 11:29 pm

ok well diving the car to day my oil light bliped on for a split second so i pulled over as fast as i could :x (i think the oil pump failed)
so the problem is money and sourcing parts so im thinking 5sfe are cheap and plentiful easy to get parts for i thought about a 5sgte (5s bottom end 3s head) but thats not really a cheap way to go if im going to do it right so i was thinking what about a just 5sfe with my 3sgte turbo kit and if possible the 3sgte ecu and harness and sensors as any one here done this and how did it run (or can it be done)
oh and im talking a stock 5sfe with like 10psi (i ran a stock 5sfe on 6psi with a stock harness and ecu and fcd in my gts but never tryed a 3sgte ecu) so what do you guys think? would this be the cheapest alternative? i want to make some power but with something i can drive more and work on less and a cheaper when i have to work on it

You will have some wiring issues and lose some performance. The FE head and intake is different and doesnt flow as well (GE head has 2 runners per cylinder) plus not sure how a FE distributor would work with a stock alltrac ECU.

Are 3SGE's too hard to find there? The lower end should bolt on reasonably easily. Not sure about the 3sfe block. I know you can bolt the 5s in, just may be alot more work and money then expected.

Have you dont some hunting for another 3s? I run into them on craigslist all the time for really cheap. Usually out of an mr2. Cheapest and easiest way to go would probably be just hunting for another 3s.

blacktop is setup for rwd, you would want a redtop, the tranny that comes with that is better than yours anyways

i was going to mat it to the awd trans in the car, im still doing so rearch but so far from ive been reading the black top is the closest bhp to the stock 3sgte and i found one with harness and ecu for 1300 shipped from a guy in Canada
this what i found online if it's accredit or not im still not sure
In 1998 a version was released with dual VVT-i (variable timing on both the intake and exhaust cams). It came in two different spec levels dependant on what transmission it was coupled to. The version intended to be coupled with a six-speed manual came with titanium valves, battery-backed injectors and a compression ratio of 11.5:1. It made 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp) at 7,600 rpm and 22.0 kg·m (216 N·m) at 6,400 rpm. The 5-speed automatic transmission version had a slightly lower compression ratio of 11.1:1, less aggressive cam profile and steel alloy valves which made for 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) at 7,000 rpm and 22.0 kg·m (216 N·m) at a considerably lower 4,800 rpm. These engines powered only the Altezza RS200

Thought the black top was only 170? Redtop is 200

Thing is, unless your comfortable with wiring, I imagine getting the ECU to work with one in the trac would be a pain.

Are the first gen 3sgte's also out of your price range? Those seem to come by cheaper on ebay.

right now every thing is out excepted the pick and pull yards unless i can sell my set up i have now but i dont care what gen. i was looking into all options i just started to lean tords the blacktop because of the price and year so there would be less miles and close hp even though torque is a lot lower(like 40feet pounds less) but im worried ill get the money around and get the thing installed and not be satisfied and other then nitrous which i put an all my toys, but after that not a lot you can do to get more power with out of it spending big money

nope as far as ive read the redtop is the fourth gen 170hp then was revised to a black top with dual vvti and upped the comp(1997-2005 in the Altezza, Caldina GT)

use your 3sgte head and a 3sfe lower end.

The blacktop beams is made to run in the RWD Altezza and the engine block sits straight up. The redtop is made for FWD and lays back at an angle like the 5S-FE and 3S-GTE. Because of this it would require a good bit of extra work to setup the blacktop to run in the Celeica. Also keep in mind that because the Beams 3S-GE was never used in cars outside Japan, the parts are expensive and difficult to get. You're most likely better off with a JDM 3S-GTE that at least has US parts support. There are a couple of Caldina ST215 engines on eBay right now for $1000 each which would be much cheaper to install than the Beams.

will the second gen electronics work with the fourth gen because i was looking at them motors but the 1000$ ones were just a motor no harness ecu and i though they ran on coil packs cask you just slam in the gen2 dizzy and go or would i have to change the cam and what about the injectors there top feeds but are they the same impedance or with my resister pack have to be changed because if i can run this on gen2 electronics i could be a option for me

3rd and 4th gen have completelt different electronics, so wont work easily.

3sfe bottom end should be a cheap option as rpz said. He knows his engine shit.
