power steering issues (cold weather?)

Hi all.

I've been having some issues with my power steering and I wanted to get you guys opinion.

Basically, when I turn the car on after it's been sitting a while, as I turn the wheel the power steering seems to go in and out, so that as you are turning the wheel it's jerking in your hands a little bit as it alternates between assist and non-assist.

I'm not sure if it's coincidence but this started once it got cold around here. And it seems to be much worse the colder it is. It's been hovering around 35 or so lately. On the rare warmish days (40's) it seems to be a bit better although it still occurs. And it also seems to get better as I drive the car and the engine compartment gets warm. Although it may just be that I'm not making as sharp turns as when I'm maneuvering around a parking lot so I don't notice it as much.

I had the car up on a lift a few weeks ago and my tech said he saw some moisture around a power steering hose. But if it is leaking it must be a miniscule amount as I can't tell a difference in the level now. Although a couple months ago before it got warm I put some Lucas stop-leak in the PS reservoir.

Any ideas what might be going on? Clogged hose? PS pump gone bad? Old/bad fluid? Any suggestions appreciated.

J.

Happened to run across this old thread of mine while searching for something else.

In case it helps anyone in the future, it was a bad power steering pump. :smokes:
