the beast size for rally is
gravel 15x7 tire 205/65r15
snow 15x6.5 tire 185/65r15 or 195/65r15
tarmac your choice 15-16-17-18

the wider the tire the more you disperse the weight
on a narrower tire your contact patch is smaller and your putting more weight per square inch combine that with a soft compound and the tire actully bites into the snow/ice

Yes, the narrow tires dig through icy crust or deep snow for traction (check out any World Rally event in Sweden or Monacco). True snow rally tires are studded beyond belief -- wouldn't be to kind to roads. In your area I'm not sure, but Four Star Motorsports should be able to help you out. It's been a while, but I think the Sprongles had something to do with this shop (used to run a championship bad-ass Audi). As for brands, Pirelli had an incredibly diverse selection of sizes, compounds, etc.
