What did you use for that quick drain thing .. is it just some generic drain valve plumbed into the oil pan or did it just screw into where the old plug would screw in ?

It replaces the oil pan drain bolt. I got it from www.lubricationspecialist.com, size F-103. It works really well. :) I got the one with the optional hose nipple (F-103N) to prevent random breezes from spraying the oil everywhere. It's only about $21 and makes a usually messy job very easy to deal with.

I have a method that will save you $21... just pull our car over a hole, drain oil into said hole, install oil and drive off. But that might not be legal if all areas; check with local EPA before doing this.

Or make friends with a schmuck who works at an oil change place. Like me!

I'm not sure a 200 mile round trip would be economical for an oil change. I haven't actually run the numbers, just guessing on this one. ;)

Another day another boredom-induced mod! This time around it was a matter of getting rid of the hideously designed stock intake routing and replace it with a nice, clean, and most of all; short, straight intake. :) The filter and AFM adapter I pirated off my Supra since it won't be needing them for a while. I made my own removable AFM harness extension and semi-ghetto'd the battery tiedown so it stays put. Eventually I'll get around to making it a little more proper.

isnt that filter more of a air restriction rather than allowing more flow? granted its heat shielded, but what u save with the heat shielding u loose to the restriction of the filter? just my two cents :)

slick tho i like it bro :)

Yeah i used to use one of those heat shielded ones and they didnt work as great in a tight spot as an open filter .

For the moment it's either crap filter or no filter at all. Given the choice, which would you use? :) As mentioned I did this just for the sake of getting it over with. Fine tuning will come later when I feel like it.

And even despite that, I hit full boost 200 RPM earlier now.

I told myself I would stop spending money on the Alltrac for a while...

...I'm such a liar.

Today, after fiddling around and scrounging parts from numerous places I put in two cheap little things; a RadioShack FCD, and a HomeDepot boost controller.

The FCD thingy baffled me for a moment as I saw what at first seemed to be the MAP sensor, but the stupid wire colours weren't matching my EWD...until I saw another sensor that looked identicle (3-wire plug, vacuum hose going to the intake plenum) with the right colours. Both are in the same area so I dunno offhand what that other one is supposed to be doing.

I left the MBC at it's lowest setting, but I guess the spring I picked up is a bit stiffer than what's normally used as I saw the telltale boost gauge hit 15PSI and I wasn't even at full throttle! And rather than get the embarassing feel of fuel cut kicking in I backed off from that point. This weekend I'll have to fiddle around with it so it behaves the way I want for now.

Yeah, I know, I'm easily amused from just a small power bump. :)

My radioshack made FCD sometimes does not work. I havent tested the voltage lately and have been running at 12 psi with the turbo pressure sensor vac hose plugged. Numerous members have had issues with theirs and it has been discussed that the AFM might also have fuel cut controls.

...on the AFM topic; isn't there a way.part to replace it with a MAF set-up? y'know, get rid of the unsightly vane-air meter? Thought I saw something about this, maybe it was on another board.
Dracov, I was getting worried about you; thought your 165 had swallowed you or something.

Supramania has a very detailed writeup on using a MAFT-Pro with an LS-1 MAF to remove their VAF. It should be doable on our setup since it's essentially the same sans 2 cylinders (7M-GE, not GTE).

But I'm in the middle of treating myself to a new computer so I'm not going to have that kind of money available for a while to come. That and the whole tuning-my-only-working-car thing...

wow, that all sounds ex$pen$ive... I don't really want that HUGE ASS VAM in my engine bay. Oh well, guess it's there to stay.

C'mon, Powerball!

Really depends...Maft-Pro runs $400ish on average...could probably get a used one for less. LS-1's are as common as anything, so parts for them aren't hard to come by, and usually not expensive. There's a way to run it in speed density configuration, but that would necessitate a wideband O2 as well.

Actually, found the link; http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35302

It's tempting, but I'm definitely not trying it until next year at the earliest.

It actually looks like that could work. I had previously dismissed the idea based on the assumption that all supras used karman vortex MAFs, but apparently the 7M-GE uses a flapper door AFM very similar to the 165.

It would be worth a shot, you should be our guinea pig. :D

Yeah, I am totally on board being the forum's guinea pig... as long as you all contribute; HEAVILY!!! :D
I tried working a 5MGE into my girl's 79 Toy truck (too long) and learned a bit about the 5 and 7MGE engines. I still have a VAM or two from that escapade. I'll just stick with the stock flapper and it'll probably end up as a permanent fixture after the car is done. Car... done. HA!
I sent away for the Spal fans that were/are in the used section. Hooray, cooling!

I know I teased you about having axles for you but there's a really good chance I'll be replacing mine this weekend, as in "I'm not working on Sundays anymore" kind of chance. Let me know if you're interested in coming down, but I'm about out of freebies to give away. :)
