From Cadence, there's also these:

http://www.cadencestore.com/ProductCart ... roduct=583

And if I do consider these (or anything else)...do I go with 2, 4, or 8 ohm? Not sure if I'll be running stock amp for now or just upgrade the amp now (with crossovers).

Sorry for posting all these links (don't even know if Cadence is good lol), but here are some I found of their CVL series with a mounting depth of 2.13"!

http://www.cadencestore.com/ProductCart ... roduct=598

It seems people either don't know of cadence (and thus spit out ignorant reviews) or said they are decent and have had some following time to time in the audio enthusiasts (especially with subs/amps)...I don't know (it was only a quick 5 minute research).

In any case, if they seem decent, I may just try these in my doors. Although, I'm still curious why the range is so high (up to 11khz vs the usual 500hz or so for the other midbass drivers...)...any ideas why this might be?

I want a midwoofer, not a midrange, in there.

Does Kicker have anything comparable? They have the COMP VR which seems comparable in specs, but the mounting depth is almost 2" deeper. The COMP VT is supposed to be the "shallow" counterpart to the VR, but the frequency seems to be lost some @ 25-350Hz vs VR's 30-500Hz (like the SSMB8).

What do you guys think? I don't know how much room is back there for the magnet (it appears only the front most part of the door has to be cut/grinded down for the SSMB8, not the rear metal portion that is deeper). But it seems like the CompVT may be the way to go now...

I just installed these recently - they're the current version of the CompVT's you linked:

There isn't an issue in terms of mounting depth, you'll have room. The issue is the magnet has a very large diameter (compared to stock) and the wire terminals are spaced such that you'll have to cut out the back of the Livesound panel as well as cutting into the door - but once you get that done, they sound great.

So no issues with the fact they aren't meant for free air? Or does the live sound box do a decent job of being the "box"?

I'd like to get the ones you have, but am thinking of those Cadence's also..

It's not specifically designed for sealed - its fine for both applications. And the Livesound box is nothing more than a large bracket. The door acts as a large vented enclosure.

Cool, so not much more cutting on the actual door itself (I don't mind cutting into the plastic box) vs the SSMB8?

I'll probably pick these up then.

The CompVTs are totally different - the terminals are such that you'll have to cut into the door. More than the SSMB8's. The SSMB8's terminals are on the sides so its no big deal - the CompVT's are on the bottom and spread apart from each other - I initially cut a little just like in the pictures, but the terminals kept shorting out on the door so I had to go back and make the following cuts to make it work:

I ordered a Kenwood KFC-XW800F and will test it out when it arrives. Mounting depth is 2-3/4", but the frame looks like it might cause some problems.

Well, the Kenwood doesn't even come close to fitting. Good thing it fits my Jeep!
