2grfe swap?

Postby rt-performance » Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:55 pm

My first topic:

Is is posable to swap the gen3 3sgte out of a st205 and implant a V6 2grfe?
The engine is 3500cc and should bolt up to the gearbox without a problem.
It's been done with the MR2 boys by woodsport and you'll need the the loom and ecu from the donar car.
The obsticals I've heard is that there're limited space for the transfer box and also steering rack.
Any thoughts on this?

I have toyed with the idea, since I picked up a 1mz to swap. I think the biggest obstacles encountered with the 2gr into the Celica, is the height of the engine. It is my understanding that the MR2 has a taller engine bay. However, I have been unable to actually obtain solid reliable measurements from any source and have been too lazy to go find an Avalon to measure.

The transfer case would be an additional obstacle I am sure as this a potential issue with the 1mz based on my preliminary measurements, but there are a few options, including a Rav4 trans/case swap.

The other obstacles have already been overcome in an MR2, so a similar route could be taken with those.

Im actually not that concern about the height and bonnet clearance because having seen the MR2's it's not that higher than the 3sgte. Also I've seen a 1MZ in a ST202 before and ther's still quite a bit of room at the top so I can't imagine the 2g being too high... but I'm I'm wrong I can always make a custom bonnet. :)

My concern is how wide it is more than the height. I don't suppose you managed to get any measurements at all Terracar?
We don't have Avalon's here in the UK and Rav4 V6 are VERY rare so I'll probably have to import one in. I guess getting a Rave4 will be better just in case I need the trans/case.

Not for the 2gr. I had asked a few members on some different boards who had a 2gr in front of them. The response was less than polite.

As it stands I have an '01 1mz complete with harness minus ECU w/60k ish on it. Since I only got it due to a damn good price, I will probably go with it since the 2gr is a bit more money.

I've been given the estimate measurements of: 700mm wide x 600mm long x 600mm high
Think it'll fit?

I was thinking if this was possible also in to a St185. I know of a GT4 specialist shop in Queensland Australia that did the conversion on a MR2 and have a decent write up about it. Even did gear ratio measurements and air con and so forth. Type into google "road and track celica" and their website should come up. Its called Road and track ipswich or something. YOu will also need the transponder key to match the engine or it will not work.

yes as done by woodsport on the spider Mk2 MR2.
You'll need the ECE, Loom and keys for this to work. Everything else can be worked round.
Though it's done on a MR2, everyone assumes it'll work in the celica given the similarity of compatability. My concern is just space. Is there enough room in the gen 5 and gen 6. That is the question I'm trying to find out before I buy the engine and shipping it to me in the UK.

Is that for the 2gr? I will check the bay to see if it will fit tonight.

Nice one. Also take in consideration how far back it needs to sit for the transfer box.

Sorry, didn't get home in time to really get any reliable measurements. Will try to get them tonight.

1mz block length - crank pulley to end of crank where flywheel bolts 18.5"
3sgte block (for reference) 19"

1mz Height - 23.5" - this is top of intake manifold to bottom of oil pan - this does not take tilt into consideration as this was taken along the midline.
1mz width (perpendicular to banks longitude) 21.5" (head edge to head edge not including manis)
1mz tilt appears to be 10-15 degrees

I am unable to measure the bay with the engine in it with the exception of the front - back. Since we know the 1mz will fit, I figured could use a base line.

5th gen engine bay front rad support to firewall 31" with the 2gr right at 700mm which is 27.56" the tilt will play a large roll in if it will fit.

I am not sure my explanation is very clear - let me know if you need a visual and I can mock one up.

I have read some of the write up on the 2gr. It sounds like a lot of work getting the security system etc to work. Almost seems like it would be easier to get a standalone.... you want to supercharge it right? 8)

Thanks bud. That was very helpful.
I 'va always thought that it will fit based on the similarities of the 1MZ.
I'm back on the hunt for the engine because the one I found didn't come with a loom or ECU.

I'm limited to choices here in the Uk because Rav 4 V6 are non existance and also RX350 are so new, no one's breaking them.
Other option is to buy a clip and import it from the states or around Europe which is cheaper to ship.

Yeah this is what I have read as well, which I think is more than I wish to tackle. I want to S/C the 1mz, not the 2gr.
