I'm going to do this mainly for Nick because today he dropped off his Alltrac motor at the shop I work at and has given me the honer to rebuild it for him :D . Depending on how pissed my other half is that I stayed home instead of going to San Diego tonight. I will have Pics of the progress Monday If she does not kill me. or Tuesday if she flips a lid.

Anywho Nick your motor is in great hands.
It was nice to finally meat you, and get this going.

Im doing a shimless conversion on this build, nick asked me to share some details about the conversion benefits and how to adjust the valves in the future.

So Ill start with the basics, the shim over bucket makes for easier future valve clearance but you run the risk of spitting a shim out of the bucket when you start modding your motor or running high rpms.

some people already know this but toyota changed to a solid bucket in the newer celica motor, and low and behold the buckets are the same size as 2nd gen 3sgte. the thickness of the buckets are different however, and now instead of adding a thicker shim you have to replace the entire bucket with a thicker one if your valve clearance becomes to tight. but in the 3sgte world most of our motors spin rod bearings or crack before a valve adjustment is needed.

The shimless buckets are also a little lighter making higher rpms that much safer.

The way I personally shim a toyota motor after a valve job, Since the new 3 angle seat grind sinks the valve in to the head a few thousands of an inch you essentially close the valve clearance, so I assemble the head with out springs and retainers push the valve against the bucket and hold it firmly and use a feeler gauge to determine how much clearance is currently there. once I determine the current clearance I grind the stem of the valve .001" at a time until I have the recommended clearance. then the head is disassembled and springs and retainers are put in and the head is reassembled and clearances are rechecked to ensure the spring pressure does not change your clearance.

So all in all shimless is much safer for a modded motor and high rpms.

the shimless bucket is on the left and nicks old shim over bucket is on the right with the shim out so you can see what the shims look like.
