[How to] remove fuel pump without dropping the tank

Is it possible? I've been told both it is and it isn't. I know there is that black cap in the hatch of my 185 that has wires going to it. Will this be an access point to the pump?

Really need to figure this out cuz I need to deal with my personal fuel/lean at running issue and really don't want drop the tank. It's my DD so it can't be down for more then a weekend.

I remember someone mentioning it can be done but from my experience I cant see how it is even remotely possible. The little access in the hatch area gives you access to the sender for the fuel level gauge, the pump is then further towards the front of the car. I ended up cutting a square access hole in the hatch floor and I am planing on covering it with an aluminum plate. Now I can always access the fuel pump quickly without the hassle of dropping the tank.
