Wheel bearing questions

So, I am looking to replace the front wheel bearings on my st165 and I have a few basic questions.

While something like this work even if my car has ABS? Not sure if ABS and non is just a sensor related thing.

I am not sure if my hubs are toast, but if I can get them at a good price I will just replace them anyway.

Or should I just buy the bearings?

Should I be aiming for a specific brand or something like this?

The hubs and wheel bearings wont effect the ABS or Non-ABS factor. As far as the bearings I would go with a high quality item. The parts are not serviced a lot and the job isnt the easiest so buying something that lasts and is high quality may be costly but very much worth it in the long run. NSK brand bearings are a good choice.

The factory wheel bearings are NSK Japan. Toyota part number is 90369-38003-77. They are pricey but will probably be the highest quality item.

Aftermarket NSK is USA-made, and should still be a decent quality part at a fraction of the price. NSK part number is 38bwd15 and I've ordered those from partsgeek.com before:
http://www.partsgeek.com/ss/?i=1&ssq=W0 ... &x=24&y=15

The Toyota catalog is showing different part numbers for ABS and non-ABS hubs. I've never worked on a ST165, so I can't say what the difference might be.

You should also replace the axle hub rubber seals while you have it apart. The hubs can be reused unless they're damaged. You'll need a press and a bearing separator to remove the wheel bearing inner race from the hub shaft.

I work for a bearing distributor in Australia and Toyota use koyo and NSK for their wheel bearings, mostly Koyo as it is owned by a company that also has a share in Toyota, so you will get the exact same bearing as Toyota would use for half the price....

there is no black magic with bearings all the top brands are on par, so it comes down to installation and sealing.

fyi im running koyo atm no issue.

Part number above for st185 abs? Trying to figure out which to buy, want to have some extras just in case.

Didn't think the rav4 would use the same bearings.

So, is this all I need to replace the front seals and bearings?

I assume just ordering 2 kits that have the inner, outer and retainer.

Also wondering if I could use these hubs potentially. Not concerned with ABS functionality as that went out the window with the st215 ECU.

or

(I am just assuming my hubs are toast) And I assume I would just toss the bearings that come with this?

One hub specifies alltrac, while the other says celica and camry. Not sure if they are different.

The ABS system has nothing to do with the engine ECU. The entire ABS module and ECU is behind the rear seat in the ST165. If you didn't touch it, then you should still have it there.

Meant more that I thought the ECU tied into it in some way for speed data, rpm or something. Currently my ABS light is on and I don't recall it being on before the motor swap.

I am not really concerned with keeping it functional, so hoping I can use cheaper hubs if the ABS ring is the only difference.

They're separate units, the speedometer is in the transmission for the engine ECU and that gives the signal for the speedometer. The ABS speed sensors are only for the ABS module for when you brake. If it senses different wheels speeds under braking then it engages the ABS to pulse the brakes in order to gain some sort of traction again so you aren't just skidding.

However, you should be fine with the different hubs or bearings, only the knuckles are different between ABS and non-ABS. That's as much as I know for the fronts, I still need to look into how the rears are, but I'd bet they're fairly similar.

Well, the hubs are atleast slightly different since the have the teeth for the ABS sensor to read. I may just try and buy a standard hub if mine is toast. At most, I waste a few bucks.

ABS Teeth/ring is mounted on the CV

Not on the front. In my 165, the teeth are on the hub. No teeth on my front CV axle. Unless I am looking at mine wrong.
