Oil pump replacement... in the car?

Has anyone actually replaced an oil pump on an ST165 with the engine in the car?

I've searched and didn't find much of a description of what's involved. I did find a thread that implies it's possible. So assuming it's possible, what's involved?

Yes you should be able to remove it in the car. You may need to loosen the passenger motor mount and lower the engine slightly to give you access the bolts after you remove the Upper/Lower timing belt cover, the timing belt, pulleys, crank shaft pulley, and then the oil pump. You essentially want to follow the BGB for replacing the front main seal and then remove the oil pump from there.

It's actually my brothers'. He tells me that it's leaking about 1/2 quart per hour when driving and appears to be coming from the oil pump area.

He has some mechanical skills but would rather not pull the engine since he's never done it on one of these before. I'd jump in and help if he wasn't 600+ miles away.

zaluss:
Good info, thanks.

I thought it was due to a bad oil pump.

I bet you its just the front main seal or the cam seals and not the oil pump itself. The cam seals will leak then run down the timing belt side and through the bottom of the timing belt cover. Before you buy a new oil pump, I would inspect that area first to be sure.

I agree. I told him to check the cam seals. I replaced them not too long before I gave him the car, so they are among the newest parts on the engine.

I never replaced the front main seal though so that could be the culprit. It would have over 100K miles on it by now. (I don't remember if it was replaced when I paid a shop to do some work on it many years ago. If not then it could be the original seal with well over 200K miles on it by now.)

In addition to the front main seal, there is another seal that commonly leaks on these oil pumps. People tend to overlook this seal often when doing timing belt jobs and such, so it can make a real mess when it goes. The part number for that seal (Toyota calls is an O-ring) is 15188-63010 and MSRP is $20.20.

If you do go replacing the entire pump, you may want to consider an Aisin aftermarket pump, which is really just the factory pump with the Toyota name ground off. I've used them on a number of cars with good results. It's cheaper than the dealer part, which is also made by Aisin. Aisin OPT-079 is the one you want. It's available on Amazon, Rockauto, and I'm sure many local stores as well.

Also if the pump is leaking it is most likely the shaft being scored. Found this
out from a local Toyota master tech (esraceing). He just bought a new pump
and replaced the outer cover with shaft. Made the job a lot easier. I replaced
oil pump on my MR2 T with engine in car but removed a lot of stuff (engine mount and
oil pan). It was a pain

I replaced the o-ring style gasket the last time I had it apart but it could still be leaking again.

Tim, that's good info about the shaft. I don't recall ever hearing that about the oil pump.

Thanks.

To answer the original question, I've replaced the pump with the engine in. But yeah could easily be the front main or cam seals. If he's not used to working on these cars he might not like the job haha! Pan, covers, engine mount come out. :)

In order to close out this thread...

My brother has decided not to fix the car (scarce free time and lack of desire, I'm old and he's older) so it's about to go up for sale.

It runs good, has new all season tires with only about 300 miles on them. The radiator was replaced about 3 or 4 years ago with a new OEM part. He tells me that the dash is now cracked. You could drive it onto a trailer no problem. The car is currently located in Northern Utah, zip 84339.

Here is a link to the old For Sale web page I put up years ago before I gave the car to my brother.

Any thoughts on what it may be worth "as-is"?

I won't comment on price, however I am interested in the car. I will be moving to Salt Lake City at the end of April and will need another car for work. Let me know when you come to a decision on a price.

Wayne, thanks for your interest.

I should point out that the pics in the For Sale link above are from August 2009. I have requested that my brother send me some updated pics and other details so that expectations are in line with reality.

I'll post more details when I get them.

Update with new details:

The new tires are on the sporty side of the all-season variety:
BFGoodrich G-Force Super Sport A/S - 195/60R14 86H

The car has not had the luxury of a garage for the last five years and therefore has been exposed to the full extent of the elements during that time. As you know, rust never sleeps and that's evident in the photos linked below. The clear coat on the paint has succumbed to the UV exposure and the dash vinyl finally gave up.

He has not settled on a price yet, but when he does I'll make a post in the for sale section.
