Tire Inflator as Air Pump for Vacuum Leak Testing?

Would an electric tire inflator pump be a good or bad choice for testing for vacuum leaks? I already modified the fitting to connect to a vacuum hose and it pumps a nice amount of smoke through the rig I made, but I just don't want to blow out any of my vacuum system or anything. I don't know how powerful this thing is or if I should worry about that. Anyone had any experience? I also have a hand pump that I used, but I'm not seeing any smoke come out anywhere.

Is the inflator programmable? On my good one you can set the pressure and it won't exceed that, on my cheap one it can't be set but it has a readout showing the current pressure output. If you keep the pressure reasonable you should be fine.
