Return to the 165

I haven't started the process of cleaning up the current leakage (other than a little shop toweling...but nothing major). It does look like most comes from the back side. The stuff on the driver's side may mostly be leakage from the PCV breather filter, as I see a a good bit directly under where it was hanging out. Passenger is harder to tell...pretty wet around the power steering area and the edges of the oil pan are all wet-ish. Whether it's mostly coming from above or from the oil pan itself, I dunno. Still need to clean up and go from there. So far not a ton of puddling onto the garage floor, but some spots.

Might've found the source of the clunking. One of the passenger control arm bushings looks to be in pretty rough shape, missing some chunks and I'd imagine may be allowing some metal/metal contact. May not be the source or the only source...but will need addressed either way. I'll get some poly bushings ordered. Never removed control arms before, something to look forward to.

I found a new dipstick tube in the original Toyota parts bag. Makes me wonder if I'm correct that maybe the current tube has been bent or is otherwise compromised. I may reach out the the previous-previous owner and see if he remembers why he bought it.

I really need to go through all the parts and inventory what's in boxes.

Edit: am I better off getting the PU bushings and having them pressed in and hoping that the control arm is still in reasonably good condition, or trying to source aftermarket control arms? I see part numbers from Mevotech, and Summit Racing allows them to be special ordered. Now whether that order eventually gets canceled, or whether Mevotech control arms are even very good...I don't really know.

Thanks! I can take it from there. I obviously have my current oil consumption issues to deal with and I am unsure if my JDM ST185 already has an LSD.
Ill def. follow up with you on that. Might have Tony drop the rear subframe and crack my diff open. (And also to take some measurement of the rear subframe hehe)

Always loved those GTS's too. High revving little monsters.

We oughta both go do it. It will solve a mystery that has been lingering about my car since I saw that “all JDM GT-Fours have LSD.”

You might be able to sneak a scope in through one of the ports and take a look, I believe that's how the guy who has been selling the newer LSDs has been checking for them at the wreckers.

You know, the 7th gen GTS is a great, relatively underappreciated car. I get that A LOT of them got riced out, and otherwise kinda butchered, but there's something great about a 2,500 lb car that redlines at 8k. And the handling is pretty good too. It may not be fast, but I find it fun. I added an LSD when I had the transmission worked on last year (I bought it with a broken 6th gear), and have an A'PEXi Power FC that I'm just going to get a Monkeywrench Racing NA tune loaded to. I originally bought the Power FC with plans to add the MWR supercharger...but a) I thought supercharging might ruin the fun of hitting "lift" and b) was able to get an st165 All-Trac for forced induction fun. That took away the supercharger money. Otherwise I just have done a few light suspension mods & the Beatrush underpanel (wish there was one for the 165). It came with a TRD exhaust, which was nice because I had always kind of wanted one on my '00 GTS.

On the topic of the 165, I ordered some parts, but not much else has happened yet. Had hoped to at least flush out the intercooler coolant and replace it with Toyota pink & Water Wetter, but did a few things around the house instead.

Still haven't done a whole lot.

I did flush the intercooler and put in Toyota pink with Redline Water Wetter. Still need to do the engine cooling system.

Installed a Model 7 HKS turbo timer. When I first hooked it up it was missing the top right section from each number, making it a bit hard to read in the middle of countdown. Not that it would matter too much most of the time (Who pays attention? You're getting out of the car, right?) But I did take it apart and try to clean the circuit board a bit, but it didn't change anything. Then I gave the case a good smack, like the Fonz, and they lit up. We'll see how long that lasts. By that time I had already ordered another HKS timer. Rather than going NEWER to ensure better reliability, I ordered an OLDER Model 3 timer on croooober. I had wanted a Model 3 to start with, but had only seen unreasonably priced ones on eBay. But then I saw this one, and combined with the Model 7 issue...I ordered the "period correct" model. The tracking number says it is on hold...but also says estimated delivery today. I'm not sure what that means. EDIT: it did indeed arrive. Pretty good condition. Not installed yet, so who knows if it actually works. Funny thing is, this is a single digit LCD...so it really offers no real benefit compared to even the partial display Model 7, considering it's still less info. 😅 But it is chunky 80's styled.

I put the TE37s from my 7th gen on to see how I feel about 16" wheels on the older body style. Maybe my tastes have changed in 20 years. Maybe I'm just used to seeing 18" or bigger on everything these days, but I think I'm OK with the 16" size – I always thought 16" was too big on the 4th gen body style. In the pictures I still kinda think they look slightly big, I dunno. Plenty of wheel gap though. (need that old smile emoji that had the missing tooth)

Took a short drive yesterday. It does have a little hesitation until it's fully up to temp. I knew this before, but don't think I've mentioned it. Otherwise running fine, seemed to make less suspension racket on these wheels. Probably incidental to this specific drive and roads, can't imagine they really changed anything. It does make some noises turning the wheel. I also don't know if it's due to the suspension issues, or due to me being used to my 2,500 lb 7th gen that has fresh AGX shocks, KYB top mounts, new OEM insulators, TEIN H.Tech springs and Beatrush 3 point rear strut brace...but it does feel a little sloppy. Not terrible. But not sharp by any means. I imagine it will get better as I get it freshened up. I just wish it was easier to find suspension parts. I don't really want to do coilovers, but I don't think there's much choice if I want to get new components. Once I get the A/C in my wife's car fixed, it may be time to order some PU bushings.

Priorities sometimes being not being what they should be...I have a set of pre-facelift front sidemarkers on the way from Europe.

Went to a local Cars & Coffee last Saturday. One guy seemed to kind of know what the All-Trac was, I probably talked to him the most. He once had a 4th gen GT. His car was a new Vette...670hp version. I wouldn't know what to do with power like that.

It was a relatively fun time. A bit out of my element, as I'm generally very introverted. I'll probably go again.

The euro turn signals arrived yesterday - bonus, he sent me a couple extra for the RH side (he only had one LH). Now I need to get a pre-facelift grille so I can get them put on. I suppose I could cut them down to install one the facelift grille...but I kinda prefer the '86-87 look.

The lack of clunk on that one drive was short lived. The drive to/from Cars & Coffee was plenty clunky. LOL. Wish there was a good suspension shop around, it would be nice to know exactly which parts are causing it. Though I'm sure most of the bushings are pretty worn.

I am thinking I probably want 15" wheels after all. I think the 16's look nice...but just a hair large. That'll have to wait though.

As long as you can find acceptable rubber to go on those 15 inch wheels. Selection is bad enough at 16 inches.

Not really much of an update really, but today I put a rubber terminal cap on the alternator connection. Original was MIA, and seems discontinued by Toyota. Fortunately the GT-S one is still available, I ordered it and it fit decently enough and looks right.

Then I worked on installing the pre-facelift corner lights and grille. It’s not quite perfect, but it’s all on. Need to try a few things to get things aligned a little better and more secure. But it’ll do for now. Lighting in that end of the garage is hideous. There’s light everywhere else but there.
