On a side note if you get an OEM throwout bearing take a look at it and see if there's any markings on it from the actual manufacturer. I know when I did a 5SFE clutch job the bearing had been made by someone else but I forgot to make a note of it. That info may come in handy someday if Toyota stops offering them.

you know, that's a good point. We should start documenting bearing replacement options somewhere here on the board. As long as it's a quality brand like NSK or Timken, I'd have no problem running something non-Toyota in the future. I'll be able to get at the TO bearing on my build sometime this year, so I can kick us off then if no one has a head-start on me before then.

Safe travels! I'm sure it'll run so so well after this gets done. That's very exciting!
If you come thru KC again, shoot me a text and we'll hook up for a burger.

wow, she's getting an overhaul for sure. can't wait to see the outcome here!
It’s with Ty Saxon at TCS Motorsports now!

He was a real gent. Friendly, knowledgeable. Spent some time with me discussing the results I should expect. Smoother operation, greater reliability, more power over a much broader power band (2000-7000 rather than the Gen2’s 3000-5000). Said that it would be definitely noticeable. The weight reductions I’ve done will add to that performance.

He appreciated that I’d have a 1200 mile highway drive right off the bat to wear in the kevlar clutch disc, and that I wouldn’t be hard launching it right off the bat. He says he’s had numerous customers drive their finished swaps home without problem.

They don’t do very many Celicas at all based on what he said. Maybe one a year, and not all of those AllTracs. The work is more involved.

Wiring harness is subcontracted out to Doug at WireGap and the powder coating is subbed out to someone else, so there will be some time involved. 4-6 weeks with maybe 6 or even 8 being probable and understandable, There’s a bit to sort out and it’s a goodly amount of work.

The Caldina motors he’s seen have been really good. Metal layered head gasket and once they do the seal job any faults are greatly mitigated. Based on my rather sedate takeoff habits (no hard launches, keeping it around 5000rpm max), it should last a good long while.

I got to take a look at the shop MR2 as well with a turbocharged V6 GR2. That was pretty cool. Turbo and air intake is on the bottom of the motor which was interesting. Said it was hideously costly and involved. Not applicable to us in any case as the GR2 doesn’t mate up to the AllTrac transmission.

Dude that MR2 you just bought on carsandbids.com is so awesome!!!
Hahahahahahah you were able to figure out it was me from my posts in the thread?! If so, awesome spotting.

Yeah, you like that? There were some who thought the price high, but I know what's involved and I know the score. IzzyD was $32K into that MR2 with the 2GR-FE swap, base chassis, and additional mods. That TCS 2GR-FE swap on an S54 tranny with NO power steering, no power windows, no power mirrors, no ABS, and hardtop is gonna scream. 2600lbs with 300hp. Woohoo!

Really excited. I wonder what's gonna happen when the wife finds out I bought it...

I'm sorry I can't hear you over the sound of my swapped engines!

I'm gonna have to put out a TCS Motorsports placard in the front yard or something.

Congrats on the purchase, consider me a member of team jealous. I'm a big fan of the 2GR. It's a hoot even in my wifes Rav4 so I can only imagine what it'll be like in that light of a car.

I've been considering it if I ever pop my motor. I love the turbo noises but making more power with just 87 octane would be a big improvement. I saw a guy in Australia that I think managed to mate it to the AWD trans for a 1st gen Rav but ran into firewall clearance issues. I'm not sure if we'd have the same problem or not but I've seen a 2GR into a FWD Celica so maybe it's doable?

This is from over at r/mr2. Some guys over there say it can be done. According to one guy 7 bell housing bolts match. One has to be tapped. The other guy says they all match.

However: The bottom of the 2GR block has to be shaved to clear the E153. That doesn’t sound like a huge amount of work.

But it’s enough additional work and hassle on top of a more hassle job than an MR2 swap that Ty at TCS isn’t offering it. Which is a pity because a close to current day motor that weighs (maybe, I heard) 100lbs (?) less than a 3S-GTE (helping to correct the AllTrac’s nose heaviness) and no turbo reliability hassles and that crazy low end torque appeals to this guy. I’d have paid handsomely for it.

Congratulations on the MR2, I had spotted that one too, although I it was just to watch, had no plans to bid. Glad it went to an enthusiast who will take good care of it! (hopefully he wont be injured to severely by the potentially unhappy wife)😉

All is well. For now. We had talked about me adding a pony to the stable. She was just surprised at how sudden I moved, and she was busy out of town so there was never a good time to talk before the auction concluded. It was touch and go for a day but I had the text receipts proving we had discussed it in general principles.

I will be on the road on the way back home with it tomorrow!

That was very fast! From toying with the idea to actually winning a bid on a 2gr SW20 lol. 2gr builds on that chassis are extremely fun. the price was right as well, the swap alone is about half of that haha

Yeah I jump on good deals. The fact that it was a TCS 2GR swap sealed the deal. I was ready to go $25K based on the whole package.

Previous owner (C&B handle Izzy D) gave me the concierge treatment today. Picked me up at the airport in his M2, we went and had absolutely on point Cuban food at his local hangout, insisted on treating me, then we went on a check ride. Gave me his binders with receipts and a bunch of extras. Could not have hoped for better. May all your transactions go like this one.

Aquamarine Pearl is something you have to see in person. Very cool. Only cooler color is Emerald Green Pearl. Younger me loved Super Red. Still catches the eye. But this is just *nice.*

431 flawless miles on the SW20 today. The S54 transmission is hilariously short. It’s like an Evo, wailing away in 5th at speed. 5th gear at 100mph is 5000rpm. Highway speeds at 80mph is 4000rpm. So as a result you *always* feel tight. The Drive By Wire throttle is instantly responsive. The 2GR has a ridic power band. 5th gear and forget it. The 2GR has so much power that you can just pass or whatever in 5th. 1st gear is hilarious. Arguably better to just start in 2nd, unless on an uphill, because you’re gonna be upshifting like *immediately.* And downshifting into first would be like slamming on the brakes (did not do).

It is said “Don’t launch the S54.” Okay. Challenge accepted. I do not launch my cars.

I had a couple of squirrelly moments with the Falken Azenis tires in the rain. Had some weather coming north from Miami today. I admit I did not like that sensation one effing bit. But on dry they were amazing.

Everything except the stereo head unit is analog. No ABS. Roll up windows. Manual mirrors. Manual seats. The radio antenna is a fixed always deployed wire sticking out of the roof. Hard top. Manual steering is a nostalgic af feeling. No cruise control. I guess the 2GR ecu was like “WTF is this primitive cruise control!? NO.” So foot control is it.

Looking forward to the rest of the trip. Will be interesting to see Ty at TCS and check up on Roreri, and then have the trip home in the SW20 to compare to the GT-Four when complete.
