Oil filter adapter o-ring

In the photo below (borrowed from turbomr2.com) the orange o-ring # 15517-88380 is shown for the 2nd gen 3SGTE. Does anyone know if it is interchangeable with the one on the 1st gen 3SGTE?

I just talked to the local dealer parts guy and he tells me that it's no longer available for the 1st gen. When I asked about interchangeability he just gave me a blank stare.
I got the impression that he has been working the parts counter for about 15 minutes, I've never seen him there before.

That's what the computer says, but if I bought the o-ring for the 2nd gen 3SGTE would it work in the first gen 3SGTE. The computer info doesn't support that, but that doesn't mean it won't work.

Has anyone compared the two and have first hand knowledge of their similarity?

15517-88380 is approximately 65mm outside diameter, 3mm thick o-ring.

You can also try 96732-31060 as well as a possible replacement. That was spec'd on the early ST185s.

They're cheap enough I'd just order them and see what fits, or doesn't.

That's pretty close. I pulled the oil filter adapter off my old ST165 and grabbed some measurements. Looking at the way the o-ring fits in the groove in the photo above, I'd say that 65mm is pretty close to fitting. The 3mm thickness is about right too.

Thanks, that is very useful information.

I went ahead and ordered the o-ring shown above, part# 15517-88380, to see if it would fit. It is bigger than the groove, but it's possible to squish it into the groove. It's not even that tough to get it in when the o-ring is dry but, since you should never install an o-ring dry, I lubed it up and found that it's a lot trickier to get in. It's still possible though and it stays in place while you bolt the adapter back to the block.

Here it is just resting in one side of the groove:

Here it is squeezed into the groove:

It remains to be seen if it leaks less than the old one, but I can't imagine it could be worse.
