May 1994 Battle of the JDM Kings

While poking around on YouTube, I found this old video of JDM cars--presumably stock--duking it out in a variety of speed and handling tests:

https://youtu.be/55QD9PKncwg

GT-Four places third behind the Lanza and the Supra in the 400m sprint, then third in the closed course behind the MR2 and the Lanza--but not by very damn much, only .5 second behind the MR2 and .3 seconds behind the Lanza. All of the cars were quite close.

Interesting front:rear weight comparisons too.

Lanza: 63:37
ST205: 61:39
Impreza: 60:40
Silvia: 57:43
Supra: 54:46
Escort: 53:47
RX-7: 50:50
MR2: 42: 58

Not surprisingly, the Supra is a bit of a pig in the closed course and the MR2 is squirrely what with the motor in the back.

Then--and this made me giggle when I thought of a Supra in the dirt--they did a dirt gymkhana course starting from 9:40. The ST205 placed second behind the Lanza, but only by a second, then the Impreza and MR2 lagged several seconds back. They only chose four of the cars. They were merciful and didn't make the Supra run the dirt course, which I would have paid to see.

In the double lane change test from 14:40, the ST205, Lanza, and Escort seemed to hold it together best of the bunch.

From 19:06 they take it to the track. A ST205, a WRX STi, an MR2 GTS, a Lanza RS, an Escort RS, an RX-7 Type RZ, a Silvia K's Type S, and a Supra RZ.

They rate the thrust to weight ratios like this--maybe including the drivers:

Escort: 5.62kg/ps
Silvia: 5.55kg/ps
Celica ST205: 5.41kg/ps
Supra: 5.32kg/ps
MR2: 5.14kg/ps
Impreza: 4.88kg/ps
RX-7: 4.86kg/ps
Lanza: 4.54kg/ps

So, the ST205 is one of the heavier cars of the bunch, but the weight trimming from the redesign from the ST185 plus power gains shows. The Impreza driver takes it right off the side of the track to try and pull off the big pass everyone maneuver which made me chuckle. The ensuing race is interesting, and all eight cars finish within 3 seconds.

SPOILER

The ST205 places last.

There was a time attack trial as well. The ST205 didn't do great, being beat by the Lanza and Escort on a wet track.
