n00b in everyway

:D hi all,

i recently just picked up a white 88 all-trac w/ 115k last week_
in short, This is my 1st :
*AWD
*turbo
*manual
*nonHonda (owned 4)

If you guys can help me out, what are some common problems with this yr/model, i'd greatly appreciate it :D

i'm guessing 1 of them is the clutch, it creeped up on me from nowhere and now it's completely dead_ :( i was going to change clutch anyway but didnt want it to be this soon_
I just ordered RPS street clutch non-puck ( i hope i made the rite choice :) ) waitinin on the bearings ( labor to get the clutch installed is abt $300? )

what do i need to get this 1g3sgte up to abt 270-300whp?
i know the 2jz is super strong, is this motor the same but in 4 cyl form?

i'm planning/saving up on :
*converting it to front mount intercooler w/ blitz dd or greddy type R bov)
*get ct26 supra and maybe rebuild it for longer lasting ( can this turbo be big enuff?)
*full 3" exhaust system w/ deleted the 1st cat, and no resonator_ is it pretty loud with just a rear muffler? or should I get a 3" hi flow cat with it?
*smaller battery
* custom intake?
*bigger injectors (what size do i need?)
*walbro 255 fuel pump
*cam gears
*turbo timer
*boost controller(?)
*Tuning ( researching on where to go in SoCal)

Hopefully, this should be enuff for my goal_ i know n00bs usually have big goal/talk etc. (seen it alot on honda boards) but i hope this goes thru and should be good for a daily driven car_ so far i'm loving it(when i got to drive it), can't say the same for my parents since they gave me big crap for buying " a big trunk of metal " for it (it's an asian thing  :x )

thanks for readin this big n00b's rants, i'll post pix once the thing is up and running , rite now it's just another stock st165, i'm sure we all know how it lo0ks :shoots:

welcome!
good to know you've got goals.
congrats on picking up a 165. get some pics up!

as for the problems that are quite common with the car, do a search.
its almost 20 years old, so expect problems that will arise with age.

enjoy your stay!

ps, labor on installing a clutch is WAY more, iirc...

thank you both...

i actually got that link bookmarked jafter i made this thread ust for any references :D

cams is the downside in for 165, don't believe there are any, 2 bad it isnt interchangable like how honda made their engines :(

how is the stock mani anyway? i mite just change out and get a t3/4 w/ external wastegate to get reach my 270whp+?

you'll always hear that the stock manifold will hold sway for about 400+hp...i'm shooting for 450awhp, and will stay with the stock manifold. also because i dont want to spend 1200 for the full-race one...

were you serious about this?

and in reference to your t3/t4 kit...you'll need an upgraded fuel system/supporting mods as well as some type of EMS (whether it be the ROM tune from ATS) or a full blown stand alone....

The stock manifold is the best thing you can have up to 400 hp. you really wont have to replace it. if you do, get a full race header or the one that 935motorsports carries. a better upgrade is getting stock 185 manifold and a 185 Ct26 or an upgraded turbo like a CT27.

welcome to the club, it seems you are doing alright with the research thing so you should be up to speed in no time.

IMO a supra CT26 isn't the best choice to get you to your goal, it's a decent upgrade but hardly one at that (i used to have one on my white 165) Others may disagree but that is just my personal experience. For injectors to get to your goal, I would think 550's should be sufficient. Also, I would stay away from ALL of those cheap exhaust manifolds. The only ones I would use are either the Full Race or the LoveFab manifolds but those are very expensive and completely un-necessary for your goal. Unless, of course, you just want the bling. :p

And like unyted said, a clutch install will be WAY over $300. The motor will have to come out (it'll take longer and be harder with the engine in) and IIRC the book is supposed to be 18 hours for a clutch install, yeah way over 300.

when I had my clutch done it cost me $250 (I provided the 6-puck/PP/TOB but took 2 months... the guy said he'd never work on another one again.

Very first clutch change on my car was 1000-1100 for a stock clutch at a transmission shop. (Dealership was even more.) I think your guy was seriously uninformed and didn't realize the true scope of work.

Hey welcome-

Yes, a good setup is an aftermarket down pipe in to replace the stock cat, high flow cat in the midpipe. Search around, there's lots of good info on this.

CeliKhanh":p06ryrme said:
* custom intake?
Not really too important, but some move their battery to the trunk & put in a cold air box.

CeliKhanh":p06ryrme said:

This is been floating around the forum:

<275whp = stock 440's
275-290whp = stock 440's + ATS FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator)
290-320whp = 550's + ATS FPR
320-350whp (beyond the resoluton of the stock AFM) =
550's + ATS FPR

CeliKhanh":p06ryrme said:
*boost controller(?)
Yes, definitely yes.
It is considered the most "bang for your buck mod" if you go with the manual boost controller.
