Just wondering if it is a common problem in our cars for the little door light switch thing to go bad? ive tried messing with mine but the light never turns on when the doors are open, the hatch does though....

My driver's switch went bad, and always thought the door was open. I had to disconnect it and will need another one at some point in time.

It's been common with me. And even other celicas i've ran into. For some reasons, the sensors just get bad, corrode, whatever. Just buy some new ones from Toyota, they are the same from celica to celica within the gen.

Most of the time (not all of the time), you can just remove the rubber cover to the switch, unscrew the switch, pull it out as far as you can, and give it a good cleaning with WD-40 and reinstall it. If that doesn't work, you can replace them with new ones or check the wiring itself.

i've replaced a couple switches before doing the easy thing and check the bulbs

yeah the bulb turns on when the hatch is opened. unless their are different bulbs for the door and for the hatch...

so the bulb on your door (light under the red cover on the door) is not working and the bulb on the ceiling is working when you open your hatch. or do you mean the light in the back of the hatch

there is three different types of lights that turn on the doors, the ceiling and in the cargo area, which isnt working. on mine, i think (cant remember perfectly havent driven it in a bit) both door lights and the ceiling light turn on hen you open the door, and the cargo light turns on when the hatch opens.......i cant remember  but this is what i somewhat remember

when i open the doors, nothing turns on. when i open the hatch only the back cargo light turns on.... also not even the little red open door warning car light turns on when i open the doors, but it does turn on when the hatch is open.

yep that would be the switch on the door.
really easy to replace one bolt from what i remember.
i cant remember what i paid at toyota for them but i think it was around 25bucks but its been soo long i cant really remember sorry but ya im sure its your switch especially since that dash light or door dinger isnt going off :smokes:

Not positively
I thought it was my switch. But it wasnt. Check out the wiring diagrams. Its frightening... I tried to troubleshoot the circuit but gave up after frustration. It worked fine till i installed my alarm
It really pisses me off that my lights dont auto shut off anymore...
I will fix it, just have to work the lazyness out of my system. So what im saying is ill never get it fixed....

but if that started after the alarm was put in, the alarm could be the culprit.
but of course it could very well be something else

 if i toggle the little rubber thing, then itll work if i get it at the right angle. pass side door is totally unfunctional...it sucks too, because my alarm is run ENTIRELY off of whether or not the doors open. seems to be the only thing that triggers it. :x

it is the culprit  Does not change my point that he could be getting the same symptoms without the door switch being the cause. My alarm was the cause, but after i took it out the problem was still there. Which means something in the circuit is bad now, because of the alarm...

yikes shitty deal man. i sorta have the same problem except my alarm burnt itself out. somewhere in the alarm harness something shorted out and that fried the computer for the alarm. so i am having to trace the problem now. :shoots:
