ST165 voltage problem

Hello everyone, I just picked up an 88 st165 and I'm having trouble keeping it running for more than a mile. I was driving it home and the alternator died. I just replaced it this morning, and its still dying a few minutes after I jumpstart it.

I haven't had a chance to check the wiring with a multimeter yet, so does anybody have suggestions where to start?

I also know that there is a short somewhere in the dash because a previous owner tried to put a stereo in and screwed it up, however I have an OEM uncut dash harness that I'm going to put in asap.

I found at least one of the problems, there's a wire that's nearly chewed through, and a fuse that, while it still works, is missing the clear plastic cap.

Are there common problems with the wiring around the alternator/turbo?

The big three wire plug on top of the alternator. The wires get brittle and break inside the insulation due to heat. This happened to my brothers 165. Check the wiring on the harness side and Alternator side if you didn't get a new extention harness with the alternator.

Check the main fuse between the alt and battery, it's held in with screws from the bottom so don't try to yank it out.

Excellent, thanks for the tips! I'm going to try to replace the screwed up bits of the dash harness so I'll add those to my list for saturday.
