Privatising AllTrac.net

Postby allblackalltrac » Tue Feb 06, 2007 7:42 pm

I used to have a mentality that some "other" GTFour forums were elitist by having they're board members pay a fee just to join. Some might even argue that even this board has a some what snobby attitude when compared to other boards.

I don’t know maybe I’m just talking out of my ass here but when I start seeing threads linked directly to threads on this board from other boards or plagiarised information and pictures without any credit giving or permission asked of the creator I get very upset.

I also know for a fact that several "businesses" used this board as a resource for information when taking on a job for a client that they have absolutely no experience with and rely souly on the information gathered by these boards’ members, without any credit ever being mentioned.

Suffice to say I am no longer going to contribute any factual threads that can be read by the general public. I’m sorry I know that might be selfish of me but I have been here a long time and contributed a lot and I never asked for anything in return but when I see my word plagiarised that’s when I put my foot down.

Again I don’t know maybe I’m just getting old but I can now see why a lot of the "senior" or "experienced" members stopped posting. Im always contradicting myself so I'll probably change my tune in a few weeks but I would pay to have a private area of the board - I'm seriously thinking about starting up my own website.

No.

The way I see it, the more people that know about the All-Trac the better off we as a community will be. Maybe more people will care abot their cars.

Good old internet, huh folks?

I agree, it's a good idea, but there's a lot of people on this board that no longer do write ups because nobody seems to care or take notice except for the people who are already in the know. I know writeups were plentiful on the last version of the board, but none of them got transferred over here, not to mention that a lot of threads get lost with the new software.

I'm going have to disagree with you on this. I mean, isn't the whole point of the internet, besides porn, to share infomation and ideas? I really liked your post on the Frankenstein motor and it would be a shame if knoledgebale members stopped posting good infomation just because someone might steal it, or use it with out giving credit.
Now if some guy with an alltrac decides to take his car to a business that doesn't know how to work on the trac and this business goes online and finds out how to do a certain procedure, then i feel that the info the business gets from the internet will still be used to better an alltrac. For whatever reason, the owner of the car decided that he didnt' want to do the work himself so he let a business do it, it's his choice. This site is dedicated to the preservation and understanding of the alltrac and the only way we can do that is to pool our knoledge.

Big deal. If you post something to a public forum, expect people to regurgitate it elsewhere. If you have some bit of information you don't wish people to redistribute, copyright it and sue them for doing so, or simply don't post it.

Lots of fast, loud things.

You said it before I did thank you

And I am sorry if some one stole the words or thoughts that you put on the site but any info that any one can put in helps other guys and gals with there cars

Also I am sorry to say that world is coming to the point where people need to plagiarize to move up in society.

Here's my take on it..

1) Its a public forum, so if you choose to post, then you also allow anyone to use the information you provide freely.

2) Making this site private would only serve to make this community even more isolated than it already is.. We're not some secret society, we're just enthusiasts who happen to own rare cars and share a passion for them.

3) If a business chooses to use any information provided on this site to help them with some type of job, they do so at their own risk. I for one would prefer NOT to be credited when it comes to a business using any info I may post on here.. The last thing I need is some schmuck saying I was liable for some damage to his car because he couldnt understand my directions on how to change out his headlamp fluid..

Whatever the case, if someone needs answers on something, somebody will most likely have them, be able to point them in the correct direction, or at least open their eyes to different possibilities..

Most likely that person will be Gary..

I understand what you are saying man, but there are a lot of members here just still trying to learn and gain different knowledge about the car, aka me :D, not only that but aren't our cars aka money pits :P, and i certainly don't have the money, to waste like that, especially when i don't have a job

If people are linking to our site because of our superior intellect. Fine.

I'm too lazy to spread my genius to all the other.... lesser, websites out there. Let them come to me!

Its a sad world if you have decided to stop contributing information because other people are actually using it!!!! What is the point of sharing your info, your knowledge, your experience? Just to get credit? I hope not. I hope you do this to help out other members....whether they be on this forum or another. I know I have learned a lot from the members of this forum, and completely disagree with the hiding of information, for no other reason than because you are not getting credit. Sorry.

Yeah, I couldn't change the oil in my 185 when I bought it a year ago. The information that I've gleaned from this site and the people whom I've spoken with/met/ bought countless parts from are the reason why this is the only forum I read or post on. Maybe if we all made an effort to give credit where it's due and offer thanks to those members who are extremely knowledgeable and helpful when rookies like me foul up their ride then hopefully this won't be an issue. It would be a shame if the best source for information about our cars wasn't much of a resource anymore.

Well said. It's always nice for people to recognize good information and give credit to the author, but yeah, we are talking about the internet here.

I say write a book on the Alltrac, then watch someone plagarize it. Then sue the pants off them

Or perhaps we can't get mods to sticky good/important/diy/faq threads.

As for my take on the main matter of this thread, i say if other sites want to use our information, let them. I'm sure they contribute in their own way too, but I do just fine being here and other forums. I guess in a way, it's a network of information. How do you know that half the things that half of us said didn't come from elsewhere?

I say keep doing what we do here, and that's helping each other out. I don't worry about who reads my posts. I personally don't mind if not a single member or person reads my post, but I know it's there to help those that may need it.

I vote no. Quit your whining - you post to a public medium you can expect to have your posts copied and used. By posting it in the first place you accepted that anyone could look at it. All the info you have gained, without paying someone to teach you, from online forums - have you NEVER used it to your advantage? Have you never looked something up thats helped you with work or a problem that could have cost you?

I've spent a lot of money (for me) installing an MS and fiddling with it continously - if someone had given me that info instead of having to figure it out I'd have saved a fortune. Thats why im writing a free-to-all write-up and enjoy the warm feeling i get when people use it. If a person wants to use my info to make cash - i dont really care, they would have figured it out sooner or later anyway. I wont be posting fine-tuned maps because i think its dangerous for the end-users engine.
