My car was smoking and I could'nt figure out what the problem was, took it into the shop and they did a compression test on it.
cylinder 1 18% leak
cylinder 2 35% leak
cylinder 3 75% leak
cylinder 4 60% leak

so now they are trying to find me a new engine :'(

got a couple people looking around, saw a couple posted on ebay...

*sigh*, at least I know whats wrong with it finally :(

what should I do with the old engine?

they were quoting $3000-$4000 to rebuild the engine :(

the mechanic found a 3s-gte for $7000 and a used one for $4000, he's still looking since those prices are a bit crazy high

been looking at doing a jdm 3sgte, does it drop right in or do you need to mess with something?

heres some I found on ebay motors, the auctions end soon

you would only have to extend the wire harness because the JDM is on our passenger side.

Towels, you do clearly have dibs, but in the event that you cant take it for what ever reason i would like second dibs

What about that jdmtigerdirect or whatever place? They have bunches of 3SGTEs, from Celicas and MR2s. Front clips too I think? At least they did when I checked last week... just another thought.

Dan

that second link... check out the CV axle on the right side... chopped off? Not a good sign to me.

Thats crazy high for a rebuild. Where are you located? I had my 3sgte rebuilt a few years ago for just over 1k. Is that with them removing and installing and all that kind of stuff??

USDM harness is not a plug n play on JDM motors?

It is mostly plug n play if you use the usdm harness. Hes talking about using a jdm harness. Didnt someone say there was one or two things not plug n play when using the usdm harness on a jdm engine?

You don't have to use JDM harness/ecu.
Keep the USDM harness/ecu to use with JDM engine.
You can find a JDM engine for little over $1k.
Make
Make sure to replace all pumps, belts, and hoses before putting it in.

Try these guys out, you will save an ass load of money, and if you call they might have something special. I think these were the guys i bought my RC motor from, they didnt have it listed on the site, but i got it for 1500 shipped. And it runs like a charm.

BUT, before you start looking for a new engine, pull your cylinder head, there are alot of things that can contribute to a leak besides scratched cylinder walls, that are alot cheaper to do than buying a whole new motor. You may have a bad head gasket, or its possible that your valves are not seating properly, its even possible that you jumped timing. In order to determine if you need a new engine, look at the walls of the cylinders, if there are big nasty vertical scratches on them its time to replace, otherwise new piston rings, a head gasket, and a checking the cylinder head may solve the problem.

Realize that with a new engine, that for the warranty to work, you still have to replace quite a few things. IE head gasket, water pump, timing belt. Its also a good idea to have the crank polished, and new engine bearings installed. Most of the people selling engines have no way of knowing if the engine bearings are still good, or if the crankshaft is properly mic'd. So when buying a used engine its really important that you take precautions that will eventually save you lots of money

well I'm thinking of getting the engine l0ch0w linked too, anybody else have experience buying from them? or is there a reason I should get from one of the other links I listed

I'm having a shop install it btw, I don't have the equipment or time to do it myself

got an update
the mechanic is quoting $2000 to install the engine, but he said he has to ask the owner if it's okay to install because he's worried about emissions check

he also said to make sure to check the warrenty on the engine

is there any way to prove to him that it would pass emissions?

If its JDM it wont pass because of not having an EGR system. Pass him an extra 100 and maybe he will do it anyways... Its worked for me. 8)
