I know a few people have wanted to convert a gt (covertible or not) however it always comes down to being way to much work to be worth it. The rear running gear takes a lot to fit in there. I don't have a gt so I wouldn't know but I imagine you have problems getting the drive shaft to fit down the middle of the car and I am guessing there are fuel tank/exhaust problems not to mention the mouting points and lack of room.

You are best to get a gt and do a 3sgte swap and run fwd which is probably pretty fast anyway.... or get an alltrac and have the chassis strengthened to turn it into a convertible.

Converting a Trac to a convertible would be waaaaaay to much fabrication. In part due the fact that the Verts were based off of the Celica coupes. IMOP swap a 3SGTE into a vert and roll on......Look for 93celiconvertible's topic in the gallery. He's got a lot a pics on his car. Nicely done by the way.

Thanks Thomas...I didn't think about the drive shaft, does the alltrac have a tunnel down the middle? It's a lot to think about isn't it.
Bob

It has tunnel down the middle
It has a hump by the tranny for the differential
In the rear you are moving the gas tank, adding the rear crossmember and
all the suspension links

In other words you will have to replace the entire floorplan, daunting on a
closed car but on a convertible you would lose a pile of body structure since
I think the convertibles might have extra bracing in the floorpan area that
you would be replacing

sooooo....

NO

Toyota tried it once at the 1985 Tokyo Motorshow:

The prototype GTFour /Alltrac was a convertible

Any convertible should have a whole pile more chassis bracing to make up for the fact that it doesn't have a roof which although not terribly strong in itself, is positioned in such a way to make a much stronger structure of the car itself. Most convertible's are heavier than their hardtop counterparts ie bmw's, mercs etc to make up for this and I imagine the celica gt and convertible are also different weights.

So you could make the alltrac a convertible but you would need to seriously beef up the chassis underneath and in an already porky car due to the awd... get one with a sunroof and call it a day.

there is a half trac convertible for sale in the midwest somewhere on Craigslist. I think it has a 205 swap and he was asking $4500. Its also painted that satin black so many people seemed to like on the exterior mods thread.

If I find it again I will repost it. I think it was Iowa or Indiana but am not sure. Oh here it is in Ohio.
