Fuel tank st165

Tried searching the topic but couldn't find answer and looked online but not clear info......

Does anybody know if a 162 fuel tank will fit a 165? I'm in need of a tank but don't find it online. Toyota site shows they don't sell it anymore. Thinking about going to a local junkyard and picking one up if it fits.

Thanks

They are completely different. The ST162 fuel tanks sits in a different location and has an entirely different shape.

The ST162 fuel tank sits approx infront of where the rear diff would be but a bit flatter with a different fuel neck design.

It's sort of unobtainium at this point. If you still have your tank, I would see about getting it repaired.

No it is unique to the ST165. It will never show up in a junkyard just being honest. Everyone in recent years either restored theirs or went to a fuel cell system.

Well that's that :| Guess I'll either have to luck out and find one or custom it. I bought the car from a junkyard and the tank was removed so I don't have one at all.

Thanks for the answers

It's been mentioned a few times on at.net but you either can find a radiator repair place or a welding shop. That's your best best for this gas tank. No way in hell are you finding a tank for a 165 unless you have a really strong horseshoe.

Found it on a forum on Facebook. Shipping is a bitch though. Needs a little tlc but it can be handled. Just glad I found one. I was really worried I never would.

Be very wary of offshore shipping, but if you found one that's legit - kudos! I have a spare ST185 tank that kinda fits st165 as well but it's rusted out. I plan on getting a mold of it at some point to have some made.

Oh it's right here in the states. Had video calls to make sure it's legit. You have a great idea with making a mold of your tank. I'm sure you can make money off that.

Are you going to have any work done to it or just toss it in and move forward with testing ? Is the small fuel line adaptor on the car still ?

For sure have to work on this before it goes on. I'll have to pour in some rust remover and clean/paint it afterwards. Everything but the fuel pump "seems" to be there but i'll find out once i get to it.

What a lucky find! Looks to be in usable shape AND you have the sending unit!! that alone is worth it. Before you toss it in, make sure it's 100% clean and rust free. Ask any of us who had the issue for a reason / experience of why that's important lol. Grind down all rust, primer, paint and coat. Ultra important.

Thanks! I'll be taking my time on getting this cleaned and painted properly for sure. I do have questions though. Are there gaskets that need to be replaced? (if so, where is the best place to get them) and it looks like I'll have to replace that piece in the red circle. know anywhere i could get that or do I have to go on a mad search again? i have many noob questions to come :D :D

The gaskets are all available from Toyota. Definitely replace them. You don't need to grind the rust BTW. There are products that you can soak the parts in that clean it even better. The whole tank can get soaked, that is what I had a specialist do.

I disagree with not grinding down rust to ensure it's all gone outisde of the tank. Inside requires soak. If the paint is not bubbled and there are visible signs of no bubbling/damaging rust, you can get by with a soak. Aside from that rust removal, i agree on the gasket situation. Also, gt4play has the gaskets here:

https://gt4-play.co.uk/shop/parts/fuel-system

I can vouch for them. My Lazarus build thread has a full write-up on tank refurbishment.

I just looked up a few products for the rust. (Evapo-Rust ) is one of them. Leaning towards that and letting it soak. There really isn't any bubbling. Mostly surface. Have any of you tried POR-15 for coating? Looking into that too. Thanks for the link "Tippo" and I don't know why the search can't find "Lazarus build". Do you have the link? I'm going to start prepping the tank this weekend.
