So the 1993 manual lists both torsen and conventional...

Alltracman78, you say the top box is torsen...you mean in your picture? Isn't that showing conventional (open)?

Gary, do you have a breakdown of the torsen like you and alltracman78 had for the conventional?

No, the manual doesn't show a breakdown of Torsen diff.
It's only shows how to remove/reinstall the diff case from the diff carrier
and how to disassemble the conventional type different case.

I think Gary's got a typo in his bgb :D

Pretty sure on mine that was Torsen in the top box. Lemme check at lunch.

*Ok, heheh, I'm the dumbass. That is the reg diff. :bangshead: *

Ha Ha
I used to have a 1992 BGB and they both show the same for differential.
There are couple of differences in wiring diagram in the back.

OK, Gary what does the EPC have ?

If you dont have the EPC could you PM me with a 93 VIN number and
I will look the differential up and see if that helps

Thanks

If you look in the EPC it will give you two part numbers, one being open and one being torsen. It will also show you the production range of those diffs. It says something like 8/91-8/93 for both types. However, if you look for a 90&91 rear diff it also gives you the same two part numbers but with a different production span.

Well I am interested in the diagram of the differential, I am assuming
that if I give it a 93 VIN number and search for the differential I will
get a diagram with the Torsen components in it and I can figure out
how to identify a diff that has the Torsen installed :)

I know in some diagrams it will give date ranges but usually it has
an inset picture when it does it, so ....

Nevermind my EPC has the differential on Fig 4101

The second page (hit next) has a new diagram with header
ST185 Limited Slip Differential, Hmm wonder if you can just
buy a new one :D

You cant buy a new one. The number doesnt work in the toyota ordering system. You wouldnt want to anyways, they cost over $1,500.

Some claim that there are some 185s that came with torsen, and some claim that only '93 model came w/ torsen standard.

I was going through the EPC at the Toyota dealership and it shows that the torsen LSD was only an option in 90 and 91 for the US market. So all 92 and 93 Alltracs have an open rear diff.

You'd be better off buying an aftermarket rear... the stock one is quite expensive if bought by the the dealer.

Aftermarket ? They would probably sell the third member at best and
then you would have to disassemble the differential

I will buy a new one from the dealer first, I'm not kidding. Only thing
is that I am not sure if I can reuse my axles, have to check if the LS
used different axles, else its a new one for me. Pretty tired of looking
for a differential and trying to make sure its LS.

well it seems I may be in luck. earlier in this topic someone said you could test by doing a pull with one side of the car on asphalt and the other on snow. Well, I did that and indeed, it was like driving with all four wheels on asphalt, normal acceleration, etc.

It may be a possibility that I have an lsd! (which would be amazing). the only other thing I can say that makes me thing i might have it is that the driving characteristics in snow seemed to be too good to be true, it would go exactly where I wanted it to go, when i wanted it, every time.

either that or it's just wishful thinking

Well, here's what I dug up.
According to the 1990 Celica New Car Features Book (Pub #NCF056U).

It looks as though the rear LSD was an option for the ST185 from 90-93.
So that means that there can be any number of rear LSD's out there.
Any of our cars could have them. We'd just have to open them up to look.

It's a pretty good read.

and send the pictures to me :D , even Gary dont have those
pictures
