Exedy Stage 2 on the way

After finding that my clutch has failed, I needed a replacement. A friend of mine that owns a performance garage down the street talked me into getting something a little stronger like the Stage 2 Exedy, part #: 16953A.

Anyone here used this clutch or something similar? I ask because I wasn't aware that it was three puck design till after placing the order and am worried that it'll be a harsh clutch for a daily driven vehicle. The good thing I keep telling myself is that it's a sprung hub. . I've had an OS Giken three puck in my RX7 before that I felt was nowhere near practical for what I used the car for (occasional drive, meets) and would go from zero to hero like the flick of a switch.

Anyways just wondered what peoples opinions were, like or dislike?

any puck style is going to be harsh, its the nature of the design. I used that 3 puck from exedy and it was the worst clutch I ever drove. Pedal was heavier than the 5.0 foxbody I drove. Not fun for a daily but it did grip. Get a full face disk, Kevlar is a nice upgrade over standard organic. Handles more heat, but at the same wear/feel. They are expensive because of the material vs metal types.

PM me if you need some other quoting options

I have exactly this part number, exedy stage 2.
Its perfect, and not harsh at all, but the friction point is much much much lower than stock and hooks up instantly. Personally I think it works much better, and when you get used to it, shifting is never the same. Don't forget that this is a sprung clutch and the car is made of steel, so its pretty heavy. These two factors soften? the harshness of the clutch by alot.

I had one of these and daily drove it. I'd agree that a full face or 6 puck would be better for daily driving, but I managed okay. It would just chatter a little bit when taking off in first because of the aggressive engagement window. Once you get used to it you'll learn how to minimize the harshness, but it will never completely go away. This is Exedy's most aggressive clutch before you go to a twin plate. So expecting stock like drivability would be asking more of it than it was designed for. That said drive it around long enough to break it in and you'll mostly not notice it. I didn't find the pedal pressure to be that bad although again, it's more aggressive than stock.

On the bright side, I've had nothing but good luck with Exedy products and currently run their twin-plate after having used this three-puck and have been very happy with both. Just don't freak out when you first drive it as it will be at it's most aggressive when it's new. It will mellow out a bit once it gets broken in.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys! I'll see how this goes and worst case scenario, I still have my low mileage stage 1 pressure plate that I could reinstall after purchasing a new disc if I just can't handle the stage 2.

Little update, I completed the clutch change today and must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the feel of the pedal. Pedal pressure was nowhere near as heavy as I had expected, dare I say lighter than my stage 1? Another surprise. . The engagement is very tame, I expected a lot of jerkiness accompanied by feathering of the clutch but there is virtually none of this! With that being said I expect it to only get better, with smoother engagement as it breaks in.

So overall I am very satisfied with the purchase!
