Hi I have a ST185 with ST205 plus FMI Garret Turbo high volume fuel pump and 3 inch exaust.

Got an engine light and wouldnt do anything but idle. Mechanic has said that the way it is wired into the original loom has cause too much 'resistance' and basically needs a new ecu. Sorry i dont really understand the electrics of it.

Mechanics are WRX specialists and work with Link ECU's he reckons id be far better off wiring one in and replacing the old loom mostly so that a similar thing didnt happen again - also probably will bring HP up to 330bhp while they are at it but mainly just doing it for a fix.

Should I take it to an auto elec, anychane thatbwould be much cheaper?

Cheers

That explanation doesn't make sense, if there's problems with the wiring you fix the wiring, changing the ECU won't do anything. If you get an aftermarket ECU then you're stuck dealing only with people who can tune that kind of ECU. If it's throwing a CEL have you tried pulling the codes to see where the problem lies?

Pulled codes got 54 intercooler and 12 which i think is because the starter is on the way out. The ecu is faulty whether thats caused by the above not sure. It has an air to air intercooler not sure if the 54 fix was done or botched. Mechanic thinks the fault was temp related possibly a bad job at putting the thermo fan on a manual. Will either pay some electricians to trace the fault or put another ecu in and disconnect the temp sensor at the bottom of the radiator which has been bypassed and maybe should have been unplugged? ECU may well have been cooked when I bought it.Looking at a cheap ecu on ebay might be worth seeing if that fixes it.
