Ground issue?

I've got my ST205 swap in the ST165. Wire harness done by wiregap so it is super nice to plug and play. Unfortunately when I hook up the battery I have extremely little function with only a few things getting power like headlights and a few interior lights. Nothing else.

I suspect a ground issue when looking at lots of old posts. Some of which are too old to see any images anymore. Can anyone point to towards exactly what ground wires need to be hooked up and where?

I have the ground wire on the intake manifold and starter, another just in front of battery to chassis, and near the alternator to chassis all connected. Am I missing something?

The fusable link block has me a little confused but I think I figured it out. The one white wire that loops back I might have gotten wrong.

Things like the ignition module and fuel pump resistors I have dangling as they don't have a home on the firewall yet. Is that a problem?

There are 6 ground points for body electrical on a USDM ST165. They are:

a - located on right front fender
b - located on engine block
c - located under left front pillar in junction block No. 1
d - located under left front pillar in junction block No. 4
e - located in left side of instrument panel
f - located on center of back panel

This link may help you a lot:

When opened, go to the 2nd from top hyperlink to Toyota - ST165 - Repair Manual. That will pull up the entire ST165 repair manual. Typically that repair manual is a subset to the Toyota Celica repair manual, which didn't contain all of the ST165 content. So that means you may need the regular 4th Gen Celica Service & Repair manual for items common to all Celicas, as that content may be missing from the ST165 manual. At the very end of the manual mentioned here are the electrical wiring diagrams, that may come in handy for you.

I've got that thanks. I wonder if any photos are available to show specific locations?

Your new wiring harness would have those ground leads in it. Not too many options in how the wiring harness is installed to make all the other power connections - so your ground leads will be at the correct locations for your ground connections. Or am I missing something?

Yeah and none on the internal grounds go with the swapped harness. Just the 3 in the engine.

This is where I think things are wrong then.

First photo is original. Next is how I have it now. That jumper wire has me confused.

Is the jumper wire you reference the one your thumb is above in the 2nd photo?

If yes, and assuming it was also there in your original photo, is that jumper wire not totally visible because it was wrapped with electrical tape coming out of the wiring harness (so you can't tell in your original photo what the other end was that is the jumper wire)?

Which of the two engine compartment Fuse & Relay Block No.'s is the one you have in your pictures? Block No. 2 or Block No. 5? (See page 455 to the large ST165 Repair Manual for reference).

I figured it out! One of the white wires was switched.
Just saw this now. So you found what was switched, and in correcting it, everything is working fine (that can work fine) now?

Yup! All dash lights etc.

a/c unit doesn't work but I swapped that out for another one and it might be defective. I have another one to try.

Engine didn't turn over but I have no way to test fuel pressure right now. Only a gallon or so in the tank so fuel pump might not be getting fuel. Gotta get more fuel in the tank.

Feels good to be close. Power steering pump is puking all it's fluid. Getting to the massive nut on that is a knuckle breaker. Thought it was tight.

Steering isnt straight so just going to get new tie rod ends since they have to be adjusted anyway.

Clutch needs fluid and bleed.

Still hoping to be ready by winter but we might get snow this weekend.

You don't need to turn the engine over to see if the fuel pump works. Check out page FI-24 (page 138) of that service manual to see how. Just need to jumper +B & FP on the check connector and turn the key to ON.

You likely don't need A/C too badly, given you are expecting snow soon!
