im sorry this is a very noobish question, but can someone explain what turbo trim is, as well as the benefits of having upgraded trim is. im purchasing a CT26 with 58 trim, and really have no idea about the trim part. i tried searching wikipedia, and have read it numerous times on the board....any clarification, please?

The most common trims for upgraded CT26s are 46 and 50. Everyone at MR2OC seems to think anything bigger is a waste.

Desert is served?

Remember, we'd rather have two deSSerts than two deSerts.

Sorry, I had retarded teachers.

This is what I have read before on the Stock CT26 turbo and it explains it's pros and cons.

http://www.mrcontrols.com/primers/turbo.htm

They discuss that the only upgrade anyone should ever need on a stock block would be this one:

I wish they had a compressor map of that turbo. Otherwise I'd love to hear more specifically why you feel that way DB. I would value your opinion as I'm seriously considering purchasing that turbo. Although, I also plan on doing a 2.2 liter stroker kit as well in the future. So could you tell me what you think about that turbo in both applications?

Like you said, no one has a compressor map for it, but I've heard its comparable in size to a GT30, maybe a tad larger.

So, it could be used with a stock block, but to get a decent amount of boost out of it, I'd recommend a built engine and EMS for longevity and durability.

I do think there was an MR2 with one installed. Maybe I can find if it had any dynos done to it.

Edited to add:
Didn't find any dynos handy, but a bunch of references after searching for "ct26/35r" on MR2OC.com

Here's a quote, ".85 a/r turbine with a GT35R compressor wheel. 61mm 56 trim compressor. No, it will not run out of puff"
Also, it supports about 300 whp near 10 psi (therefore the limit of boost on the stock fuel system) and well over 400 whp at more realistic boost levels.

Do a search yourself for more info.

hey toxy, with that hot end bolt configuration, won't one need to get a downpipe with a matching flange? 7 bolt...hmmm....externally wastegated. awesome.

does a higher number indicate higher trim, or is it the other way around?

What? and What? are you talking about??? The turbo I referenced is a bolt on affair with an internal wastegate. It takes the stock turbo housing and modifies it but it is supposedly a bolt on affair.

Larger trim number means larger compressor blade. Unless there is any clipping of the turbine blade going on, a larger trim is just going to beef up the midrange torque and create more lag as there is more mass to spool up. That's why 46 and 50 trims are common. Additional, usable power increase with a minimum of extra lag.

Yep, that's LB's shop. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying something from him. Apparently he no longer sells the CT26/35Rs anyways, as the profit margin on them was small (and they were sourced from Australia).

Seems like a handful of them made into MR2 market. They pop up from time to time in the for sale section.

So DB.. first off I am saving up for a Stand Alone ECU.. Secondly I am going to build up the engine and with that being said to keep the car from being laggy and more geared for Auto-X or canyon Carving, what size turbo would you recommend?

Honestly? I don't know, because I don't know everything you plan on doing, but a TD06 or a T3/T4 46/50 trim would probably suit your needs well if response and power are equally important to you.

If throttle response was more important than ultimate power, a CT27 might be a good choice with all the major bolt ons.
