Rav4 close ratio gearbox info

Just a thought that crossed my mind yesterday, some Rav4's had 3sfe powerplants and some were all wheel drive (96 - 00 i think), what transmissions did they use? i looked for one a a wreckers 2day to see if they were similar 2 an alltrac but i couldn't find any.

i doubt they'd be the same but it would b nice if they were.

Not the same AFAIK, however, a 3SGTE will bolt up to them. A few Rav 4's out there with little 3sgte's under the hood...

It is a swap for the alltrac but ratios are different, some have swapped all depends on what you want etc....

i had a suspicion that they'd be almost the same because i doubted Toyota could be bothered developing a new box for a Rav4.
what are the ratios like compared too all trac transmissions? are the ratios similar to an RC?
Are their ratios better suited for 1/4 mile than my st185 gearbox? or would it only be helpful for autocross and motorkana events?

There is also a thread here and gt4dc with ratio details. I am really thinking about using the rav 4 final drive in my RC box. There are 2 rav 4 final drive. I have a taller than stock rolling diameter and I want to get the final drive that will give me a slightly less than stock RD.

The 94-00 Rav4 boxes are also useable if not the same an 2001~
94-00 Rav4s came with 3sfe not 3sge engines but the gearbox will bolt on to any 3 series engines

These may not be 100% correct let me know what needs fixing.

The Rav4 gearbox is a popular close ratio mod and are great improvements for rally, autocross, motorkhana etc… events

The rav4 box is no weaker than a st185 box and being a Toyota geaebox is strong compared to other manufactures.

Top speed with a Rav box is reduced to 120mph/200kph which is still higher than any speed limit iv heard of. the improved acceleration translates to higher torque figures on dino sheets which may make ur awhp figure smaller.

The link below shows what modifications are required to use a rav4 gearbox its mainly swapping some parts off a gt4 box. The right hand driveshaft requires a little work but the left hand one slides right in and works fine. I have a rav4 box in my garage... Someday I'll finish this V6 swap... Cat won't be usable on the track anymore though, unfortunately. 120mph is nowhere near what speeds I hit on any tracks around here. Oh well, that's what the miata is for anyway. :)

Maybe you can swap the RC or altrac final drive into your rav 4 box. If and when the time comes, I would be up for trading you an alltrac final drive for a rav 4 final drive.

Besides. That is a 120mph with stock power. You would have had to gain some top end with the power you are producing. Combine that with a stock alltrac final drive plus a taller tire and I bet you would be closer to 140+ mph.

The 120mph is just what redline in 5th gear is on the stock rav4 final drive, not a power limit. You'd need a taller final drive to get more speed. =)

I have planty of dead alltrac boxes around to swap final drives on, but I'm not sure if the gears will just swap over. We'll see. The plan is for the car to be an autox car, so I'd be pretty okay with shorter gearing. One gear that goes to 45 (2) and one that goes to 65/70 (3) would be real nice for serious street mod action. We'll see how it turns out.

Yeah, I am looking into doing the rav 4 final drive. With my rolling diameter, it should put me just under the stock gearing with oem final drive and stock tire diameter. I think this will give me the acceleration I like with the 205 swap and leave enough room if I decide for more power in the future.

Yeah, I'm figuring that, given the lower powerband of the V6 I'm putting in, combined with the much torquier response, with the bigger tires I'll be running (315 V710s), it's going to be about right for autox with the shorter FD.

It seems that the RAV4 4.562 final drive would get my ratios closest to having a stock tire size/FD.

I will really concider this project once I decide to dive into the clutch project.

There might be more, but those are the only two I know about. Those are both post 2000 model rav 4. Pre 2000 might have had different final drives and who knows what the new v6 model has.

Hey CMS-GT4 thanks for adding the revs/gear/speed tables.

i had read about there being different rav4 ratios but i only found information on one. the gearing may be different between the 4's and V6 and then different again after the model change in 2000 :shrug:

iv also head contradictions about swapping the Rav4 final gearing. CodingParadoxmaby you could compare ur v6 gearbox to some of your dead allTrac ones? let us know i it looks possible.
