ST165 pump, and A/C control head

Postby SoLoAuto » Mon Jul 08, 2019 8:02 pm

Hi,

We have a customer's 88 All Trac that needs an intercooler liquid pump and level sensor, or a kit that would drop in with a front mount or something. The owner wants to keep it stock if possible so we would really like to find a replacement coolant pump. We also need an HVAC control head with the automatic controls which, I also can not seem to locate. Any help would be awesome, these are cool little cars and I was personally pretty stoked to see it in our shop.

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but it will at least give you part numbers to do some lookups to see if there are any available (new or used).

And for the HVAC control head, this view (note it depends if it has A/C or not, and if it does, if it has manual or auto A/C). Apparently, these units could be installed on a 4th Gen GT or GT-S also, so availability (via salvage) may be possible.

Do you still have the original heater/ac control unit?

When I had an 89 gt, I fixed it when I found it had numerous broken solder joints just due to age. I just reflowed fresh solder to all the joints and it worked fine again

Is this the HVAC head unit you are seeking?

The Celica 86-87 HVAC units do not interchange with 88-89 ones, so just be aware. Resoldering the joints. A magnifying glass helps identify cracked solder joints.

The IC pump I believe is discontinued but the Prius pump supposedly works with a little bit of mod to the mounting points. I haven't tried this myself but another 165 owner did it with good results.

Rick89GTS, you are right. While the HVAC units look identical and will fit properly, there are part number differences, even within the 86-87 group (for those with auto A/C). I suspect the wiring connector is the primary difference. That said, I wonder if the A/C ECU is also obtained and the wiring harness between the two, if that would result in a direct fit (if the source wiring connector to the A/C ECU is at least the same between 86 & 89)? I saw the A/C ECU behind the HVAC unit through the opening where the radio once was.

Here are the part numbers for just the HVAC units with auto A/C:
- 1986: 55900-20390
- 1987: 55900-20391
- 88-89: 55900-20450

Yes, they reconfigured the button and electrical arrangements from 86-87 vs 88-89, so there is visual difference. I tried the swap just to see and it doesn't function properly. Lotta work to swap out the wiring harness and not know if it's work or not. I think I'd stick with the 88-89 HVAC unless I was really in a jam, lol.

That's great to know! Did the Prius pump bolt up or did it need some modifications?

Doesn't really bolt right up but I mounted it to the bottom of the battery tray and modified the wires. Used the existing hoses. I would say the volume is probably not as good as a big fancy Bosch pump but it works and has for years now. 8)
